Help Komera raise $45,000 to fund holistic education programming for 740 at-risk adolescent girls in Rwanda!

Believe in Komera

From Komera’s 10 years of experience supporting the dreams of young women in Rwanda, we have learned that for a girl child from a vulnerable environment to thrive, excel, and achieve her dreams, she not only needs a supportive environment but also a full package of education requirements to make her more focused and willing to remain in school. Komera develops self-confident young women with a holistic approach rooted in education, community development, and health.

What are we doing?

The Komera Girls Education Initiative will open the door for 740 adolescent girls to rewrite their future by providing a holistic education inclusive of tuition scholarships to secondary school, personal and academic materials, school-based mentors, and leadership training to create an opportunity for each girl to thrive and become a social change agent in her community.  This global pandemic is a turning point when girls who don’t return to school right now, may never go back. Your support will unlock potential and opportunity for the most at-risk adolescent girls in rural Rwanda to shape their future with the education, confidence and skills to become the next generation of future leaders.

Why now?

There is a critical need for these interventions now more than ever due to the COVID-19 crisis. A recent survey conducted by Komera found 80% of girls knew a handful of friends who have gotten pregnant or married since the lockdown period began in March. The need to keep girls focused on their long-term education and career goals is more important now than ever before. We have always advocated and support young women to reach their goals, and now it is crucial that we are proactive and constant in our measures to mentor and support.

How you can support:

$500 can fund a year of boarding school tuition at a top-notch secondary school

$250 fills her bag with all of the school materials and personal supplies she needs to thrive

$100 unlocks a week-long leadership summit for a secondary school student

Every gift counts and goes a long way to fund holistic education for vulnerable girls in rural Rwanda! Thank you!

What will this project fund?

80 secondary school students will all of their personal and academic materials to thrive for a full year at boarding school
240 adolescent girls to attend leadership workshops covering essential topics including sexual reproductive health, gender-based violence, career mentors, and more
500 secondary school students to be supported with school-based mentors while at boarding school
6 school-based mentors to attend three intensive trainings

Tell me more about Komera:

Komera  was established to support the dreams of young women to attain their full potential. We believe in the power of education and community-led transformation, where change is driven from within. Komera believes that for adolescent girls to attend and remain in school, graduate and become young leaders and transform their communities, they require layers of support. Komera achieves our goals through a holistic, 3-pillar strategy using education, community development and health. We sponsor secondary school scholarships to the most vulnerable girls in our community, because secondary school degree is a barrier to future achievement and long-term success for women. We have supported 174 young women graduate from secondary school and transition to universities for higher education and business development. Our education program provides full scholarships including tuition, school supplies, personal hygiene and health coverage for 86 young women in secondary school and 82 in universities across Rwanda. We are proud to report a 100% graduation rate at secondary school, with 66% of graduates going on to higher education. While in school, scholars are paired with mentors to support their development. Scholars meet weekly with Komera mentors at their boarding schools who provide the guidance necessary to keep scholars focused to achieve their goals, in and out of school.  An essential part of our holistic development program is that over school breaks, scholars attend week-long Leadership Camps for training in goal setting, sexual and reproductive health (SRH), gender-based violence (GBV), human rights, and advocacy. The outcome of our holistic approach can be seen in students’ responding to have increased confidence and self-esteem, as well as agency; having the power and resources to make choices about their future.

Thanks so much for your support in this endeavor, and please make sure to spread the word by sharing!
