Spain Teaching Abroad

Donation protected
Hello everyone!

My name is Katie Kober, and I am currently a junior at Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, IL and live in Aurora, IL. I am studying Elementary Education with a minor in Spanish. Many of you who may be reading this know me either from Akron, Ohio where I have spent most of my life, or from my more recent life here near Chicago, IL. I hope to one day be a bilingual teacher or teach in an ESL setting either internationally or in Hispanic areas here in the US.

The Lord has laid on my heart such a passion for education and even further, such a desire to know and serve Spanish-speaking students. However, as a native English-speaker, only so much Spanish can be learned in the classroom. The best way to work toward fluency is by immersion, and the following opportunity that I will discuss provides the opportunity to learn Spanish directly and specifically in an Educational setting. Additionally, for a long time now, I have also specifically felt the Lord’s leading to Europe. Therefore, the opportunity that I am so excited to tell you all about and I will soon discuss at more length will be a culmination of these things that I feel that The Lord has intensely and faithfully ordained.

Earlier this week, I have been offered an incredible, once in a lifetime opportunity to volunteer with CIEE as a member of their Teach Abroad program. This is a 3-month volunteer experience (beginning this January) that consists of working as an English Language Specialist, teacher assistant, and English tutor in a Spanish primary school. I will be teaching in all subject areas to elementary-age students. This trip consists of a homestay in either the regions of Castilla-La Mancha or Castile y León- two absolutely gorgeous regions outside of Madrid. Staying with a native host family will greatly increase my Spanish fluency and allow me the hands-on experience to one aspect of my future that I know The Lord has laid out before me.

This opportunity is a total cost of $3,000, which includes my school placement and program fees, travel costs, housing, 2 meals per day, as well as a TEFL course and certification. This is a Teaching English as a Foreign Language certification that is included in this trip cost that will enable me to teach internationally in the future and also enhance my resume for potential teaching positions in the US. And while my offer to be a part of the program has been extended, I am not able to confirm my acceptance until the first $1000 (the commitment deposit for the TEFL course and certification) is paid. As a college student paying primarily for my own tuition, financially, the expenses that this trip entail are simply not expenses that are plausible for me to take on.

With all of this being said, any amount that is donated to making this teaching experience a reality will be so invaluable to me. I cannot even express my thankfulness to those who are willing to donate and invest in this trip that is going to allow me to meet God where He’s told me that He’s moving.
