My brother, Andre L. Brown aka, "GIJoe" proudly served his country in Operation Desert Storm/ Desert Shield. Currently, he is in the last stages of cancer and is under Hospice care. He just had his 5th siezure today as I am typing this.
Unfortunately, after a 20 year tug- of-war and numerous appeals, the Veterans Affairs compensation owed to my brother never came. He suffers from PTSD which stiffled his quality of life; our mother had to retire early to take care of him. Without proper insurance coverage, my family will need assistance with his funeral expenses. Although a military graveside burial is a no cost benefit, my brother was a Christian man who wanted a funeral held in the church where he was born, baptized, and served as usher. The government allotment does not pay for many of the fees associated with a traditional "Home-going" celebration. With great humility, we ask for your assistance.
Before he began this last phase of trasition, we wish we could have told him a that his full VA benefits had finally been approved and the Army he loved had finally done right by him.
But we would rather he fly Home peacefully than let his final thoughts be weighed with worrying .
I know this story is a often repeated one; however, I hope you can find it in your hearts to help us give Andre the kind of final rites that he deserves. He served America and we are thankful for his service. Now America, will you help serve our beloved Andre by assisting us with his final services?
