Kits for Kids

Kits for Kids is an initiative taken by Girl to Girl to create school supplies kits for kindergarten students in schools located across Edmonton, Alberta. This project aims to reduce the financial burden caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic has largely impacted families in poverty, especially those with children who have learning disadvantages and/or limited English skills due to being New Canadians. Many parents are unable to work right now and may or may not be eligible for government aid. Parents are expressing their concern about being able to provide for their children once school begins in the fall.
After consulting with the Director at Edmonton Public School Foundation, we chose to help Kindergarten students specifically because they are at a vital age for skill-development. The Director mentioned that if Kindergarten students fall “behind” due to lack of resources, they tend to stay behind throughout their entire primary school experience. The supplies kits will be put together and distributed to disadvantaged families in Calder School, Beacon Heights School, Tipaskan School, Mee-Yah-Noh School, Lauderdale School, and Princeton School.
UPDATE AS OF NOVEMBER 2020
We wrapped up our Kits for Kids project at the end of August 2020 by putting together backpacks full of supplies for disadvantaged Kindergarten students at Calder School, Beacon Heights School, Tipaskan School, Mee-Yah-Noh School, Lauderdale School, and Princeton School. Thanks to each of you, we exceeded our goal and fundraised nearly $4000! Combined with our grant awarded by TakingITGlobal and the Government of Canada, we were able to donate $5500 worth of school supplies, winter clothing and accessories, shoes, and additional items.
Before we first launched our project in May, we had concerns surrounding COVID-19 and how it would impact the success of our project. As the weeks went by, our concerns were replaced by an overwhelming amount of support from you all. Our biggest takeaway from the past few months is that even a pandemic cannot keep our city from coming together during times of need. We hope to be able to share pictures, videos, and stories of the children you are helping soon. Until then, we want you to know that your contribution is putting smiles on the faces of our entire team and that we will appreciate it forever. Thank you so much!
