Kirstin's Pre-med Fellowship Fund

Hi everyone! For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Kirstin McGregor. I am a 4th-year Medical Science student completing my Bachelor’s Degree at Brock University. Since the young age of 6 I have had big dreams of becoming a Paediatrician and now I’ve been presented with an opportunity that can help make my dream become a reality.

In recent years my passion for medicine has led me to different volunteering opportunities, including volunteering at a cardiac rehabilitation centre over the summer while working full time. I am also currently volunteering in the ER at the Greater Niagara General Hospital, as well as at a spinal rehabilitation centre for individuals who suffer from conditions such as multiple sclerosis. These were all amazing opportunities, however, I knew I still wanted more first-hand experiences. I then applied for the Atlantis Fellowship and after multiple applications, interviews and phone calls; I finally received a phone call saying “Congratulations, you’ve been chosen for the 2018 Atlantis Fellowship!”

The Atlantis Project Fellowship is an opportunity for pre-med students to travel abroad and shadow doctors in foreign hospitals to gain first-hand experiences such as witnessing actual surgeries. It did not take me long to understand that this would be the perfect experience for me before applying to medical school and that it would help enhance my knowledge for my future endeavours. Disappointingly, after seeing the cost of the fellowship I had to make a long hard decision on whether I was ready to commit that amount of money.

The fellowship would cost me a little over $8000 for 4 weeks in Almansa, Spain. It wasn’t until a wise little birdie said to me “If this is something that you feel will get you to where you want to be, then there are no questions to be asked, do it!” With that, I accepted the fellowship knowing that when there is a will there is a way, and I will work as hard as I can to make the money to go on this fellowship.

To end this off, I am asking if anyone is able to donate whatever he or she can afford to bring my journey to life, I will be forever grateful. If you are unable to donate, please just know that your support alone goes a long way and is one of the things that keeps me motivated to push on. I would not be where I am today if it weren’t for you, my family, and friends encouraging me every step of the way. Words will never be able to explain how much you are appreciated!

Thank you for taking the time to read about my journey to becoming a doctor and thank you for being a part of it!

With all my love,

Kirstin McGregor

P.S. If anyone has any further questions regarding the fellowship and details, feel free to send me a message!
