Medical Fund for Kenvert Cyrus

Donación protegida
The Eastern Caribbean Kidney Health Foundation is a Canadian registered non-profit company raising funds to assist kidney disease/failure patients for persons who live in the Eastern Caribbean and require haemodialysis in order to survive.  Many of these persons have to pay for treatment out-of-pocket due to the lack of funding available from the local government in Eastern Caribbean nations.  These governments are trying but resources are scarce and it can be difficult to sustain the cost of dialysis for their respective populations.

Like many of you reading this, we are fortunate to live in a country with universal health care or have ample medical insurance but persons in the developing world are not so fortunate unless they have private medical insurance which is not accessible to persons with kidney disease.

Our first campaign is to assist an individual living in St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) who must pay US$200 (CDN$260) per dialysis treatment up to 3 times per week to survive. His name is Mr. Kenvert Cyrus and we would like for you to read his story below:

Good day to everyone. My name is Kenvert Cyrus of Georgetown, in the beautiful country of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. I am presently living with End Stage Renal Disease.

Here is my story.

I was born on September 15,1968, on a small estate village in the north-eastern part of St. Vincent, called Orange Hill. I was the first born for both my mother and father, however I grew up with my grandmother. I never met my father until I was 42 years old. My grandmother was a very strong woman, and she placed emphasis on education. She worked on the estate digging out coconut from the shells. It didn’t pay much but we survived. My grandmother sent me to school every day and I did extremely well in Primary school, taking first position almost every end of term. I passed the Common Entrance Examination, taking the 32nd position island wide. Due to our poor condition, I almost didn’t go to Secondary School, but luckily, I was given a scholarship to attend the St. Martin’s Secondary School. I gladly took the opportunity with both hands and performed well at the secondary level. I, however, was only able to write three subjects, because my grandmother couldn’t pay for more than that. Not to be deterred, I started going to Evening Classes, where I passed four more subjects, including Mathematics.

After gaining these subjects, I started looking for a job, so I can repay my Grandmother and mother. I was involved in Screen printing, because I was good at drawing and designing. Then my big break came. I applied for a teaching job, although I wasn’t too eager to take it. I asked myself, how can a soft-spoken young man like me take a job where you must talk for almost the whole day? It seemed like a paradox, but I persevered and got to love teaching. In September, 1990, my mother took ill. She had cancer, Cervical cancer. I was devastated by that situation. She died one week before my birthday. My grandmother was there for me throughout. I was able to help her, by taking her out of the one room shack in which we grew up and putting her in a three-bedroom house. She appreciated that very much.

The Family in Earlier Times

In 2004, I met the love of my life, Annis Lavia, a teacher from the small village of Owia. She taught at the same school I did. In 2006, our daughter, Kelsey Cyrus, was born. I was the happiest man alive, but that happiness was cut short in April, 2010, when Kidney Disease reared its ugly head. I was hospitalized in June,2010. Due to the severity of my illness, I was immediately sent to Trinidad, where I was able to do dialysis. At that time haemodialysis was not done here in St. Vincent. I spent some months in Trinidad and returned home where I started doing peritoneal dialysis. I had a very hard time getting accustomed to that type of dialysis, due to the rigorous steps you must take to prevent infections. I was infected about three times and that pain was excruciating to say the least. I coped with it.

I married to Annis in January of 2011, and went back to Trinidad in September 2011, where I started back doing haemodialysis. At that time, the financial strain was beginning to get heavy. I had to ask for sponsors to pay for my trip to Trinidad. The Lord was good to me and I always had enough to last for an extra week. In November 2011, I came back to St. Vincent where haemodialysis was just being introduced by the family of a gentleman who had kidney disease. He had bought two machines, but was unable to fully utilize them because sadly he died. His family, therefore, decided to make them available to Vincentians afflicted by the disease. I was one of the first patients on the list. The center has now expanded and is doing well helping Vincentians who have kidney disease.

In May 2015, my wife was given the most devastating news a young lady can get. She had cancer-Cervical Cancer. My mind wondered a lot back to my mother who also died of cervical cancer. Am I going to be robbed of another special lady in my life by cancer? The disease took my wife on July 25 of 2016, the day after her 37th birthday. She suffered a lot although she went to Trinidad and United States for treatment.

From September, 2016, I became a single parent, when my daughter came to live with me. I have been trying my best to make this ten year old feel loved and wanted. We usually sit and reminisce about her mom, and I tell her stories of her mom. In school she is doing excellently, taking the first position every term in her class. At present, she is in Grade 5 and will write her CPEA exams next year.

Kelsey and Dad

Being a single parent is not easy. You must balance your time well and be able to make your child feel loved. You must provide for them and be able to manage your home well. Over the years, the financial strains have been building up. One of the reasons for releasing this version of my life story is to seek any sponsorship to help pay for my dialysis sessions, which cost 0ne thousand dollars per week. A very hard mountain to climb.

I pray that someone will see my story and sympathize with my situation. Thank you.
