A Kidney Transplant for Steph

Donation protected
Hi All

I have set up this GoFundMe page to help fund my daughter Steph’s kidney transplant.

Last year we were all so proud, when my beautiful daughter Steph completed her teaching degree and commenced her career as a primary school teacher. Unfortunately, less than a month later Steph’s kidneys failed, due to the side effects of 17 years of illness and medication. A kidney transplant is now her only chance for a normal life, so I’m asking for your help to raise funds for this costly process.

Steph has endured a long and painful battle with her illness. She was only 7 when she was diagnosed with Lupus, an auto immune disease. The Lupus resulted in her being hospitalised countless times over the years, and unfortunately, she became quite the regular at Princess Margaret Hospital and more recently, Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital.

Seven years ago, doctors attempted stem cell treatment and chemotherapy to treat her illness, but both were unsuccessful. After 17 years of strong medication, including immune suppressants, cortisone and opioids, her kidneys failed in August 2017. Since then Steph has been undergoing 4 hourly sessions of dialysis, 3 times per week, and has been placed on the organ transplant waiting list for a new kidney.

Fortunately for us, she has been blessed by a family member of ours, Michael Jardim, who has agreed to donate his kidney to Steph. Michael has undergone numerous tests in South Africa to determine if he is compatible and has now travelled to Perth to undergo a last series of tests. So far so good and doctors are hopeful that Michael will be able to donate his kidney to Steph (tentatively scheduled for April 2018). If it turns out that Michael is not compatible, he has agreed to be part of a kidney exchange programme whereby he would donate his kidney to someone else in exchange for a kidney for Steph. Doctors estimate that Steph’s recovery process will take 4 months while Michael’s could take up to 3 months, during which time both will be unable to work and will require ongoing medical attention.

We are asking you for help to raise money for all out of pocket medical expenditure, travel and living expenses for both Steph and Michael during this period, as well as for their recovery time post-surgery.

Any donations will be most appreciated.

Thank you and please help spread the word.
