Our Mom (Andrea Perison-Azzopardi) was diagnosed with Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) in her early 20’s. At that time, her father had passed away (age 53) from PKD and her brother was suffering from PKD which he lost his battle to on August 19, 2015 (age 59). After seeing her father and brother pass away from this disease at such young ages, you can imagine how overwhelming it was and how grateful she is to have the opportunity for a transplant. She has lived a very healthy life taking care of herself doing all that she could in terms of the disease. She has overcome numerous medical challenges in her battle against PKD. These have included high blood pressure, the removal of over 100 cysts from both of her kidneys and multiple hernias (5 total).
Mom was listed for transplant September 22, 2017. Our Aunt Donna (who is her match) knew right then that she wanted to be tested. She needed to lose weight just to begin testing and within 3 months Donna had lost enough weight and has since then lost over 80 pounds! We are so grateful for all of the sacrifices she has made to do this.
Mom will be undergoing two major surgeries this year: 3/27/18 a nephrectomy (removal) of her right kidney along with the transplant of a new kidney from her sister and returning a few months later for a nephrectomy of her left kidney. There is health insurance but with high deductibles. The Georgia Transplant Program states, “The cost of immunosuppressive medications typically ranges from $20,000-$30,000 per year and even with insurance, co-pays can be unaffordable.” She will be on immunosuppressive medication for the rest of her life.
