Darron Lee Phann - Memorial Fund

On November 11, 2019, Darron Phann died unexpectedly of sudden heart failure. He had just turned 22 , was in his 4th year studying Nanotechnology Engineering at the University of Waterloo and was due to graduate in the spring of 2020.

Darron lived a full life and liked everything science. He was always willing and available to help friends with anything, especially in chemistry, math, and physics. He enjoyed various hobbies including building lego structures and solving the Rubik's cube, hitting a personal record of 39 seconds. For over fifteen years, he practiced Goju Ryu karate and achieved the rank of Shodan. Darron was fortunate enough to train in Japan under Nobetsu Sensei; a student of Gogen Yamaguchi.

At the age of twelve years Darron had open heart surgery at Toronto Sick Kids Hospital. He recovered quickly and lived a rich and full life without any health complications since that point. Darron recently spent two co-op terms in Suzhou, China. He traveled to many cities across China, then traveled to New Zealand and Japan before returning home to start his fourth year.

There was no indication that Darron's health had declined.

Darron exuded a calm presence. Not much could rattle him. In the words of his closest friends he was thoughtful, stoic, patient, contemplative, brilliant, and generous-hearted.

In acknowledgement of the excellent care Darron received at Sick Kids before, during, and after his surgery ten years ago, his family is launching a fundraising campaign for the hospital in memory of Darron.

Still smiling just before going into the O.R. in March 2010.

Flying kick by sunset.

Darron's favourite place in China, Zhangjiajie mountains.  In his own words, "it felt very spiritual".

In Copenhagen with mom and younger brother.

Having fun with a Rubik's cube.

Darron, the goofy scientist.
