KES Outdoor Learning Environment

Donation protected
The purpose of an outdoor learning environment is to encourage children to be active, to interact with nature, and to support learning through a variety of experiences.

The KES Outdoor Learning Environment will provide learning activities that will enhance learning in the following areas:

-Cognitive Skills (pretend play via the stage, mud cafe, fairy garden, dinosaur table, construction zone)

-Social Skills (turn taking, role playing, and learning to work with others in all areas)

-Literacy Skills (books and other literacy activities provided in the reading garden)

-Fine Motor Skills (fine motor board, pretend flower garden, art area)

-Science (planting flowers and vegetables in raised bed, learning about the life cycle of plants and flowers, observing insects, birds, etc, experiencing sites, sounds and smells associated with the outdoors)

-Creative Expression (art area, music board, dramatic play on the outdoor stage)

The following statement was obtained from the International Journal of Early Childhood Environmental Education, v3 n1 p85-97 2015

Longitudinal studies now confirm the economic, academic, and social importance of high-quality early childhood education. At the same time, a substantial body of research indicates that an outdoor learning and play environment with diverse natural elements advances and enriches all of the domains relevant to the development, health, and well-being of young children.

Our cover photo is a picture of what the area looks like now.  This image is our vision!  The funds collected will be used to purchase wood, trex board, screws, nails, art materials, sand, mulch, stepping stones, trucks, dinosaurs, flowers, seeds, books, storage bins, bird feeders, etc.  This area will be used by the 3 Pre-K classes at King Elementary on a daily basis.  It will also be available to the K-5 students to supplement the things they are learning in their classrooms.
