Sonko and Corinne met in Kenya in 2010 while doing what they love – helping Kenya's youth see a path for their lives and assisting them in pursuing it. They are soon returning to Oyugis, Kenya to continue this mission. And the principal means by which they connect with the community is the Oyugis Soccer Academy.
Just prior to meeting Corinne, who was visiting Kenya as part of her ministry work, Sonko Ouma founded the Oyugis Soccer Academy because he was compelled to help guide the youth, particularly the young boys, toward a life with objectives, goals, and even dreams. And once those boys had established a sense of direction and ambition (which alone is an accomplishment), he mentors the boys as they follow them.
Sonko is an experienced player, having competed in Kenya’s semi-professional Division 2 league. He uses that experience and his Class C UEFA coaching license to influence the lives of the boys he coaches.
For the last few years, Sonko and Corinne have lived in Portland, OR where he has been coaching at Portland City United and for Timbers programs while she has continued her career in restaurant administration.
It is their goal to use those two skillsets to establish and share a self-sustaining life of service with the objective of developing the lives and soccer skills of the youth of Oyugis. These funds will be used to open a restaurant in Oyugis. The restaurant will serve American food, which is coveted in Kenya, but only offered in the larger cities many hours away.
The revenue from the restaurant will be used to maintain a structure of support for the Oyugis Soccer Academy, the boys participation in the academy, and the education costs of the boys, while also employing boys from the soccer academy.
For those of you who have not been blessed with meeting or knowing Sonko and Corinne, understand that they are driven and well suited for this mission. Corinne has spent many months in Kenya committing her heart, time, and energy to the children and families she meets. Sonko is motivated by knowing both the challenges of being raised in Kenya and the opportunities that exist beyond his hometown. As a person, Sonko is athletically imposing yet gentle at heart. He encourages boys to see beyond their doubts, understand their internal assets, and have expectations of themselves. Then Sonko urges and guides the boys to honor those expectations.
