On the evening of November 26th, this dear friend of ours, Kelly Memphis, was in a tragic car accident in the rain on her way to her parents' house for Thanksgiving. Her car was T-boned on the driver's side by a pickup truck, and she was trapped in her car in great agony until firemen could cut the door off to free her.
The EMTs could hardly believe she survived, much less that she wasn't brain-damaged or paralyzed. However, Kelly suffered a broken pelvis and hip joint, a broken tailbone, a concussion from hitting her head on the steering wheel, nerve and muscle damage in her left leg, and lots of glass embedded in her face and head from the shattered window and windshield. She was rushed to the Shock Trauma hospital in Baltimore, where she pulled through a risky 6-hour surgery the next morning to repair her hip with plates and screws.
Although Kelly's operation was a success and she was released from Shock Trauma a week later, she's still in a great deal of pain. After spending a week in a rehabilitation hospital, she had to move in with her parents in northern MD to receive in-home care rather than return to her home in DC. The doctors say it will be at least 3 months after the surgery before Kelly can put any weight on her left leg, and she'll have to undergo arduous physical therapy for another 6-9 months before she can return to normal activity.
On behalf of Kelly and her friends, we ask not only for your prayers for a miraculous, speedy and full recovery, but for your tangible help as well. Anyone who has been through a serious medical emergency such as this will tell you that one of the most difficult things about it "“ what literally adds insult to injury "“ is the enormity of the bills that pile up because of it.
These include massive medical bills above what health insurance will cover for surgeries, long hospitalizations in specialized facilities, extended physical therapy, personal medical equipment, and expensive prescriptions. In Kelly's case, they also include the cost of replacing her car: her 1998 Pontiac is totaled, and she'll need a car to return to work in DC (she won't be able to walk well enough to use public transit). In the midst of all these bills, she won't receive a full salary until she's able to return to work.
From college onward, Kelly has worked hard to be financially stable while still being generous to others. Besides the reality of her being in such pain for so long, the idea that this accident could plunge her into debt is absolutely heartbreaking.
