Keira's SDR Surgery

Donation protected
Asking for help does not come naturally to me, but as hard as it is, my daughter needs help to have the chance for a better life.

This is Keira. Keira was born prematurely at 35 weeks. She needed some help to start, everything seemed perfect not long after until she reached 10 months old. Many appointments and tests later she was diagnosed with a form of Cerebral Palsy (Spastic Diplegia) a few weeks short of her 2nd Birthday.
Keira's form of CP means she has muscle tightness in her lower limbs. This has various effects for her such as making her balance unstable, walking on her toes, and pain every day in her legs and feet.

Keira is a very bright, amazing, confident 5 year old who does not let her disability define her. She loves to sing, dance, and wants to be a runner when she grows up. But as she is getting older, she is noticing that some things are not as easy for her as they are for her friends and others around her.

Keira is currently on a waiting list for surgery called Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) which will benefit her greatly. This spinal surgery will cut the damaged nerves which affect her spasticity in her legs. This will help improve her balance, co-ordination, and help her to walk without pain.

The NHS does not currently fund for this surgery. It is on the "NHS top up scheme". The money raised will be used to pay for her surgery, her stay at GOSH (Great Ormond Street Hospital), and her aftercare. This will include several days a week of physiotherapy and other means to help her recovery be fast and successful.

Without the surgery, Keira will need ongoing treatment for the rest of her life. This would be in forms of splints, serial casting, botox injections, various physiotherapy appointments, and she would have to use her wheelchair more often than she would like. With surgery and post operative care, she will still need help and support, but will have a better means of life to improve her already amazing confidence and independence, which every child deserves!

Thank you for taking the time to read Keira's story. Any help is gratefully recieved from both myself and Keira, and we will keep our page updated with any news we recieve!
