The most recent health journey with my parents, Ron and Felicia Clark, began in March of 2017 when my father had to undergo major heart surgery while dealing with stage four kidney failure. Couple those health issues with an inability to work and provide income for the home and we were suddenly facing a serious crisis within the family. We prayed and sought after the provision of the Lord and he provided in every way through the help and support of family and friends. We believed God was taking our pain and turning it into a new purpose of bringing our family together. We were grateful and looking forward to things getting back to normal.
What we didn’t realize was that the “normal” we were hoping for changed to a whole new normal on May 26th, 2017. While cooking a meal and getting ready to sit at the table, my mother Felicia collapsed. After being rushed to the hospital we soon found out she had a bilateral thalamus stroke. This was a setback that made it harder to find purpose in. These are the moments when our faith isn’t easy to find confidence in, but nonetheless, we took the news as it came and fought our way through the storyline and did our best to trust the Lord. Felicia, with her determined Italian drive for life and family fought back to be with her family. She survived and is now recovering to a new normal. The outcome: both of our parents are now in need of financial, spiritual, and physical care.
My mom has short term memory loss. Some of her eyesight is compromised and she is now learning to live again through the basics of walking, talking, eating, and caring for herself. She can come home, however she needs at least 5 hours of care a day. My dad is not able to care for her and her needs because he too is learning to function in a daily capacity as well. They are needing at least 12 weeks of in—home care until their long term care can kick in. In addition to the immediate needs, we believe it is best to get our parents closer to Colorado where our family can encourage, support, and assist in their recovery, as well as their future. All of this is not only hard emotionally and physically, but financially. It is a burden that we cannot bear alone. As humbling as it is to ask for help, its also a blessing to know to that many of you will want to.
These two events have hit our family really hard and fast. Taking care of the elderly is not only an obligation of a family, but it is also a moral obligation. In my own experience, it has been the moments in life when I chose to give to those in need that I felt most human.
