Keep Kelly Moving Forward

Kelly has been essentially homebound for 2 years; she relies on friends and family to transport her to doctor’s appointments, social events, and to her volunteer position two days a week at the disAbility Resource Center of Fredericksburg. In May, Kelly spent a week at the Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center and obtained a new driver’s license with restrictions for hand controls and a prescription for a mobility van with a side entry ramp, a power transfer driver's seat, right hand controls and a steering knob. In order to support her family and to get back out in the community, Kelly needs an accessible vehicle.
Kelly has faced many challenges in the last two years and has worked very hard to overcome them. Her ex-husband walked out on the family after 23 years of marriage. Six months later she had a massive, saddle pulmonary embolism and was in a coma for 17 days. Her body began to shut down; her children were told to say their good-byes. She had a 10% chance of survival. After three weeks in a coma, she spent two months in a rehabilitation center and was able to regain function in her left leg and left arm. She has continued in physical therapy for 18 months.
Her friends know Kelly has already come a long way.
Getting her mobile again will be an asset to her family and the community. An accessible van equipped to her needs runs upward of $60,000. She has obtained a grant from the VA Department of Aging and Rehabilitative Services that will cover about half of the cost. Kelly feels she will be able to finance about $15,000; she has had to declare bankruptcy this year and still struggles to make ends meet each month on her Social Security Disability Income.
Her mental fortitude and physical strength is an example to all of us of the power of faith and perseverance. Kelly is thankful for the support and continued prayers of her family and friends, and for the medical team who saved her life.
We have set our goal at $15,000 to help Kelly be able to afford a vehicle, We would love to have her in a new vehicle by Christmas (or sooner!),
