June McDaniel's Alzheimer's Care

To start off, my sisters & I really hate asking for help, but this is for our Mom June McDaniel.  She has been living with Alzheimer's for over 5 yrs.  She endured watching her mother & brother battle this disease & was the sole care giver for our Dad Jimmie (Wahoo) who had Alzheimer's as well.  For so many yrs. she has put everyone else first & now it's our time to provide the best care for her.  What's beneficial for her is to be able to keep her in her current home however, we are depleting her savings & are now facewd with having to move her again, but this time to a nursing home.

We sold our parents home to help with Mom's living expense & moved her into her first assisted living.  It was close to home & we thought she would be safe.  Unfortunatley, she was not happy, the staff was not trained to care for Alzheimer residents & she was constantly sent to the hospital for falls, bruises or beiing combative.  They made us move her to another lo9cation they owned which turned into an even worse situation.  It wasn't clean (and infected with bed bugs), short staffed with very little training.  All she did was wander up & down the hall with no interaction with other residents.  After only 26 days we got a call & were told she tries to exit the building too often & she can't stay any longer.  We were given 24hrs. to find another location.

We found a wonderful place that has a memory care unit designed specifically for Alzheimer's/Dementia residents.  Mom (June) has lived there for almost a yr. & she has flourished.  She has plenty of room to walk with her little buddy Ms. Jean, she is fed well, kept clean & even participates in some of the activities they provide daily.  Everything is familar& you can tell she feels safe.

Another move for Mom would be traumatizing & costly.  She would be taken from a home she is accustomed to & confortable with to something very unfamilar & frightening.  Additionaly, a new facility requires an admission fee, which usually equates to one month's rent.  Where Mom lives currently has been the absolute best place for her & all we want is to exten her stay there as long as possible.  Any funds we raise will be soely used for her stay at her current home.  If there were to be any funds left over, it will be donated to the Alzheimer's Foundation.
