HOW DO YOU KNOW JOE?
Perhaps you know Joe from dance workshops or group tours? Maybe you’ve enjoyed his vast insights into music and dance? Or you might share a mutual love of history, reading or…. chocolate peanut butter bars?
However you know Joe, if you’ve spent time with him you’ve experienced his passion for the dance and music of Greece, and his dedication to sharing that passion with others. Whether he is welcoming a beginner into the horo or taking time to detail the wide variety of dance styles and traditions he has mastered, Joe draws others to and into the rich world of Greek culture.
Maybe this was the year you’d hoped to travel with Joe or attend one of the workshops he had scheduled to learn new dances and enjoy old favorites while learning more about Greek culture.
Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, those events have evaporated, and with them, the main source of Joe’s income. As a self-employed dance teacher Joe has for decades supported himself solely by traveling around the world to share his knowledge. Bringing all of us Greek music and dance has been and still is how Joe makes a living.
NOW HE NEEDS OUR HELP TO KEEP SHARING GREEK MUSIC AND DANCE
Pre-virus, Joe had hoped to upgrade his ancient desktop and replace his glitchy laptop, both of which are integral to his livelihood, even more so now that he must move online to continue working. The goal of this fundraiser is to allow Joe to make the upgrades that will secure his extensive holdings of music and dance media, AND more efficiently offer workshops and recordings directly from his home to yours. A win-win for everyone!
HOW MUCH IS NEEDED?
The GoFundMe team estimates that $5000 will cover the cost of an iMac desktop all-in-one and a 13” MacBook Pro for mobility when live streaming and (eventual) travel to workshops. In addition, Joe needs external hard drive backup, a CD/DVD player and cassette digitizer, and other peripherals to support the new IT system. Should donors’ generosity exceed that dollar amount the funds will go to help Joe make ends meet in these very uncertain times.
WHY CONTRIBUTE?
When you hear Greek music do you get up and dance? Can you recognize the region, the village, even the era a Greek melody is from? Can you lead a Greek dance even if you aren't Greek? Chances are if you answered yes to any of those questions Joe has figured in your life. Over the years he has brought so many of us joy and camaraderie. He’s shaped our musical preferences and made us better dancers… all through his love of sharing Greek music and dance.
