Help Keep Newsstand Open

We need help raising money on behalf of Kaufman Newsstand, as it currently remains shut due to city fines. The story has been featured in local newpapers "The Spirit" and The New York Post, as well as on NYC radio station 1010 WINS.

Local beloved newsstand operator, known as Sammy to his customers, has been shut down for months as he fights the city against fines. During Covid, he received two summons for expired license. With no proper court hearing and little information on how to navigate license renewals during the pandemic, the city kept adding $100 per day penalty until one day he realized he owes the City a ridiculous sum of about $94,000. He is even willing to pay a lesser amount of whatever he can afford, if only the City can agree to meet him at an acceptable amount. Local council member and the neighborhood continue to rally to keep his small business open.

The neighborhood and city council members are now rallying to help keep the newsstand. Sammy has stayed in the community through the pandemic and created many ties with his customers throughout the years. Even in this brutal cold weather, even as his newsstand remains shut, his hardworking nature and loyalty towards his customer motivates him to show up outside the newsstand every single day. Please help get his newsstand back through your generous donations.
