Arca – Afrikanisches Bildungszentrum / Afrikan Education Center- Fasiathek (German below / Deutsch, siehe unten)

We are a group of Black, Afro-German and Afro-Diasporic people with diverse skills and coherent visions. We are creating a new, open space for education, literature, solidarity, art and encounter, exchange and expression.

What is the project about?

We are pleased to open the Fasiathek, as a project of our association Arca, in march 2022. It‘s an archive for Black literature and a salon for Afrocentric art. At the same time, it‘s a decolonial place to chill and hang out.

Our Fasiathek, is named after Fasia Jansen (singer and activist). A relative of Hans-Jürgen Massaquoi, who was the managing editor of Ebony magazine in the USA. Both were born in Hamburg and never knew anything from each other. And it is precisely these events, among others, that inspire us to create new open spaces together by telling our own stories, investigating, questioning and appreciating our stories on a deeper level, while writing new stories and telling stories.

The art of storytelling is an endlessly important tradition, especially in African cultures. With Arca, a new important place is emerging to let this tradition take place through different media and forms of expression.

Arca is an archive for Black literature, a Salon for Afrocentric art.

In Hamburg, the Fasiathek is the first (authentic) address for Black media and Black media makers and contributes to a life in an open and diverse society. A society that can be appealing and enriching not only for Hamburg residents and sympathisers, but also for tourists and guests. With the Fasiathek, an offer is being created for people who already have an interest in African, Afro-diasporic and Afro-German literature and media, as well as those who have not had access and who would like to engage with these groups of authors and media for the first time. Every person is welcome.

What we‘ve achieved so far:

100 sqm fully furnished space in the heart of Hamburg.

Open from Tuesday to Saturday

Readings with top-class authors (e.g. Dr. Natasha A. Kelly, Sharon Dodua Otoo, Dayne Kodua)

Children and youth projects (e. g. calligraphy and cocoa workshop)

For the realisation of our project we have knocked on countless doors, written applications and searched for fundings. It is crazy, sad and painful, that funds needed to keep our structure running, are not provided by the public agencies. We are entitled to project funds, but we are not allowed to use them for rent payments. Now we need help to get through the next phase.

We have a lot of plans. Unfortunately, we don‘t have any public funding available. Therefore, things are getting tight now and we need your support.

Wir sind ein Netzwerk bestehend aus Schwarzen, Afrodeutschen und Afrodiasporischen Menschen mit diversen Fähigkeiten und stimmigen Visionen. Wir kreieren einen neuen, offenen Ort für Bildung, Literatur, solidarisches Zusammenleben, Kunst und Begegnung sowie Austausch und Ausdruck.

 Worum geht es in dem Projekt?

»Fasiathek« Fasia Jansen Institution für Bildung, Dialog, und Empowerment Bibliothek/Archiv/Medienzentrum

Wir freuen uns, die Fasiathek, als ein Projekt unseres Vereins Arca, im März 2022 eröffnen zu können. Sie ist ein Archiv für Schwarze Literatur und ein Salon für afrozentrische Kunst. Gleichzeitig ist sie eine dekoloniale Begegnungsstätte und gemütlicher Rückzugsort.

Unsere Fasiathek, ist nach Fasia Jansen (Sängerin und Aktivistin) benannt. Eine Verwandte von Hans-Jürgen Massaquoi, der in den USA leitender Redakteur der Zeitschrift „Ebony“ war. Beide wurden in Hamburg geboren und haben nie etwas voneinander erfahren. Und es sind unter anderem genau diese Begebenheiten die uns dazu inspirieren, gemeinsam neue offene Räume zu schaffen, indem wir unsere eigenen Geschichten erzählen, unsere Geschichten auf tieferer ebenen ermitteln, hinterfragen und wertschätzen, während wir neue Geschichten schreiben und Geschichten erzählen.

Die Kunst des „Storytellings“ ist besonders in den afrikanischen Kulturen eine unendlich bedeutende Tradition. Mit der Fasiathek entsteht ein neuer wichtiger Ort um diese Tradition durch unterschiedliche Medien und Ausdrucksformen stattfinden zu lassen.

In Hamburg ist die Fasiathek - die erste (authentische) Adresse für Schwarze Medien und Schwarze Medienmacher*innen und trägt zu einem Leben in einer offenen und diversen Gesellschaft bei. Eine Gesellschaft die nicht nur für Hamburger*innen und Sympathisant*innen, sondern auch für Tourist*innen und Gäst*innen ansprechend und bereichernd sein kann. Mit der Fasiathek entsteht ein Angebot für Menschen, die sowohl bereits ein Interesse an afrikanischer, afrodiasporischer und afrodeutscher Literatur und Medien haben, als auch diejenigen, denen der Zugang fehlte und die sich neu mit diesen Autor*innengruppen und Medien befassen möchten. Wir sind angetreten mitten in Hamburg Altona diesen Ort zu erschaffen. Jede Person ist herzlich willkommen.

Das haben wir bisher geschafft:

100 qm voll eingerichtete Räumlichkeiten im Herzen Hamburgs

Offener Betrieb von Dienstag bis Samstag

Lesungen mit hochkarätigen Autor*innen (u.a. Dr. Natasha A. Kelly, Sharon Dodua Otoo, Dayan Kodua).

Kinder- und Jugendprojekte (u. a. Kalligraphie-und Kakaoworkshop)

Für die Umsetzung dieser Projekte haben wir an unzählige Türen geklopft, Anträge geschrieben und Fördermittel gesucht. Es ist verrückt, traurig und schmerzhaft, aber für Gelder, die unsere Struktur am Laufen halten, bekommen wir von öffentlichen Stellen nicht. Projektgelder stehen uns zu, aber diese dürfen wir nicht für die Mietzahlungen verwenden. Jetzt brauchen wir Hilfe, dass wir die nächste Phase überstehen.

Wir haben viel vor. Leider stehen uns jedoch keine öffentlichen Fördermittel zur Verfügung. Daher wird es jetzt knapp und wir brauchen Deine Unterstützung.
