On Sunday July 25th Keegan was watching TV with her family when something just didn't feel right. Her father Bobby intuitively took her pulse and realized it was much higher than it should be for eating cucumbers on the couch. So to be safe they took a trip to the emergency room. Not long after is was concluded that Keegan did in fact have Leukemia and was immediately airlifted to UNC Cancer Hospital in Chapel Hill. Due to hospital policies she had to begin this journey by herself and take this flight with her parents forced to race behind her by car. This will no doubt be a foreshadowing of their having to navigate the complexities of the healthcare system.
As of the night this goes live (14 days later) she will have had received 5 blood transfusions, 4 rounds of chemotherapy, and will have to travel back and forth to Chapel Hill for chemotherapy from Wilmington weekly for several months.
Keegan is a fun-loving 14 year old who is looking forward to her freshman year of high school. She loves her younger brother and sister more than anything. She also happens to be an honor student who has recently found a fondness for fencing. She loves science, choir, theatre animals (especially her cat Cappy) hanging out with her friends and family at the beach, and is capable of truly captivating anyone who is lucky enough to hear her sing her rendition of the song "Jolene".
Keegan's doting parents Bobby and Danyel are two of the most genuine and caring people and are beloved in our community. Due to the care and attention that Keegan will require they will be forced to take time away from work to care for her and travel to Chapel Hill. The financial challenge of what is come for this family is hard to bring into focus, but that's where we come in.
