KCHS Youth And Government Program

Hello! My name is John Melnikov and I am a teacher at Kolbe Cathedral High School in Bridgeport, CT. I am also the advisor for Kolbe's Youth and Government program. Each school year, a group of dedicated students takes time out of their busy schedules to attend weekly club meetings where they craft bills, opening statements and diligently study parliamentary procedure. These young men and women are truly dedicated to their club. 

All of this preparation throughout the year is in anticipation of the yearly Youth and Government conference sponsored by the CT YMCA held in Hartford. Students from all over the state come to Hartford for a weekend each March to attend a mock legislative session. Students sit in committee at the Legislative Office Building and argue their bills amongst their peers on the floors of both the house and senate chambers of the capitol building. The weekend is an amazing experience for our students and one that they look forward to each year. The memories and experience gained are priceless and do an immense amount of good. Students learn an enormous amount about the legislative process and politics in general. 

Our YAG club here at Kolbe is one of the most successful in the state. We would very much like to keep it that way! 

That is why we are reaching out to donors to help us raise the money needed in order to keep out club alive and well. Any donation is GREATLY appreciated. We are asking for $4,000 

While this number may seem steep, the funds go to cover the price for hotel accommodations for our 9 YAG delegates for two nights plus meals and transportation to and from the capitol. Our deadline to send in a check to the YMCA is February 14th. 

Please consider donating to this worthy cause. Your generosity is needed at this time and will go a long way in helping us to achieve our goal. In a larger sense, your generosity will also go a long way in inspiring a young man or woman to take a more active role in their local communities. Perhaps one day a Kolbe YAG delegate will become a state rep, state senator, city councilmember, Mayor, or dare I even say President of the United States!
