Hello. My name is Kayla Halbig and I am 17 years old. I have decided to take a gap year after my high school graduation. During my gap year, I hope to participate for six months with the Up With People (UWP) program.
UWP is a program that tugs at my heart because its purpose is to inspire young people to make a difference in the world.
It inspires youths to travel to different regions of the world and connect with people different from myself, through endless hours of community and volunteer service. In addition to these services, we will be performing and entertaining weekly with music. For the last 10 years I have been involved in theater, dancing, and or singing. UWP will give me an opportunity to excel in my dream to major in theater once I start college.
I will live with host families while working closely with other kids my age to inspire youth to make a difference in their schools, communities, and the world - all while developing my own leadership potential. I will also be taking part in the academic credit program.
My mom has supported me solely through the years, and I really want to do my part by helping to raise the funds. As she says, "You're almost an adult. You need to find a way to do things on your own." I can hear her voice while I'm typing this.
And in addition to Go Fund, I plan on fundraising through different events locally and working during the summer to help contribute to the funding for this trip.
