5/12: I am writing this with the heaviest of hearts. Kartrina passed away tonight surrounded by family and her best friends. On the morning of May 8th, Kartrina was involved in a domestic violence incident where she was shot in the head. Kartrina was rushed to Duke where she underwent multiple brain surgeries and continued to fight for her life. Today my loving aunt lost her daughter, Alana (10) and Karter (2) lost their mother, my cousin Tony lost a sister, and countless other family members and close friends have lost someone who was taken from us too soon due to a senseless act of violence.
Kartrina was a loving mother of two beautiful girls, a dedicated RN, and an amazing daughter. Kartrina and her mother Evelyn shared a friendship that many mothers would only dream of. They were inseparable! I can't imagine the hurt she is feeling right now. I'm so thankful that Alana and Karter have their nana to take care of them. But I also know she will need help to give them a great life!
As we await the release of Kartrina's body into the hands of her loving family, we are looking to raise funds in order to pay for her funeral services and to care for her daughters. If you can find it in your heart to donate, Kartrina, her family, her friends and her community will be eternally grateful. We lost someone dear to our hearts and not having her here with us is still the most surreal feeling. She is forever my cousin. She is forever an amazing daughter. She is forever her daughters' mother. She is forever in our hearts. Thank you in advance for any and all help in our family's time of need.
