Happy New Year !!! January 14, 2019 UPDATE
It is a great new year for Kathy, Russ, and Nathan. All have settled into their new home at 7395 Scotts Drive, Beaumont, Texas 77708. Cards and letters are appreciated as well as planned visits.
On Christmas Eve, Kathy’s family spent time at Russell’s son’s house. Yes, the wheelchair van is making community outings and doctor visits more comfortable. Doctor visits to Houston are scheduled in February.
Kathy’s physical and occupational therapies continue with promising results. Now, she has the ability to move her left leg, to push against Russ’s hand---a great achievement that Kathy is building on. The new, more comfortable, customized wheelchair has finally arrived. And, Kathy is working to stand up from her wheelchair and from her bed. We are all very pleased with the approaches and dedication of Texas Home Health Care and their therapists.
And, Russ has retired after 34 years with Market Basket. He is out of the formal work world to care for Kathy and get some well-deserved physical rest from butchering. He is learning how to sleep until 6 a.m.
Your continued support is appreciated. COBRA payments for Kathy’s continued health care coverage are now being made. And, we continued to research better housing options. We are looking for a place with 3 bedrooms/2 baths, little to no carpet, and doors at least 30 inches wide for Kathy’s wheelchair. Please give one of us a call if you know of something.

Update-----November 16, 2018
Kathy will be going home to Beaumont soon !!! And, she is more than ready to go home. Her recent doctor visits back at Hermann and TIRR have gone well.
Kathy has been working hard at Touch Stone in Conroe-- improving her swallowing, speech, balance, and strength. The therapies staff are talented and persistent. Her insurance coverage for neuro-recovery at Touch Stone ends December 11th and lots is being done to have a successful transition back to Beaumont.
We have purchased a wheelchair accessible Ford van. (Thanks for your donations.) A customized wheelchair and shower chair have been ordered. And, we will need other equipment (an electric hospital bed) and ongoing supplies. And, we will be hiring some part time home care workers to support Kathy.
As many of you know, there are very few homes or apartments in SE Texas housing stock that have roll-in showers, wider doors, or other accommodations for people using wheelchairs. Our long-term housing plan is to build a customized wheelchair accessible house for her and Russell in Beaumont. Building the accessible home will take 6 to 8 months.
With her discharge in December, we will be using temporary housing (apartment or mobile home) until the customized home is financed, designed, built, and delivered. Whatever we select, it will not have a roll-in shower or other features that will come in the customized home.
The support for Kathy’s healing has been amazing and we thank you.
And, we ask that your visits to her in Conroe at Touch Stone, 9297 Wahrenbuerger Road, New Genesis Building, continue. Weekdays after 3 p.m. and any time on Saturday and Sunday are good.
We will let you know when Kathy is settled back in Beaumont. And, a visit to her will no longer mean fighting the greater Houston traffic.

In mid-June of this year, Kathy Bell-Schexnaider was in Huntsville, Texas, about to tell her personal story as a family victim of a drunk driver decades ago. As she began her presentation, Kathy had a stroke through bleeding in her brain. Kathy--a wife, mother, my sister, aunt, grandmother, community member, and crime victims advocate ---needs help with the costs of her rehabilitation and recovery.
The stroke has heavily impacted her left side, her ability to swallow and talk, and her energy. And, her generous, stubborn, funny, strong, opinionated, and loving personality remains fully intact. She will need all that and more for recovery and rehabilitation.
Her course of treatment has already included 24 days in Houston's Memorial Hermann Hospital with about 20 days in the neurological ICU. As of today and the coming weeks, Kathy will continue her rehabilitation in a SE Texas nursing home.
We hope Kathy will soon qualify for admission to TIRR Memorial Hermann, the premier long-term rehabilitation and research program in Texas.
We, Kathy's family, are beginning to better understand the extensive therapies, equipment, and supports she will likely need to make the maximum recovery possible. And, the medical and health care expenses to get to her fullest recovery are beginning to come into focus.
There are deductibles and co-payments for most medical and health services she has and will receive. And, there will likely be items that are not considered "medically necessary" by the health insurance company that are important to Kathy's health, well-being, and quality of life. All donated funds will be used for Kathy's rehabilitation and recovery from the stroke.
As many of you know, Kathy has been a tireless advocate for victims of drunk drivers out of the Beaumont office of MADD for almost 18 years. She has comforted victims, educated convicted drunk drivers, supported law enforcement officers, prosecutors, and judges to prevent drunk driving and to deliver justice for all the victims of the #1 cause of death on U.S. highways.
With encouragement from Kathy's work colleagues, friends, and victims that she has helped, her family has set up this GoFundMe page. I am her oldest sister, Holly (Hollis) Turnham, and will serve as the page's administrator.
Kathy has fought for people and justice her whole life. Now, she needs help to fight for her health, healing, recovery, and rehabilitation.
We hope to raise $12,000 in the next five months to cover the hospital and nursing home deductibles and co-payments as well the expenses for the initial, intense physical, speech, and occupational therapies and any durable medical equipment she may need. No donation is too small.
