“New Year, New Me!” That’s Daisy Mae’s motto. This gorgeous gal was ready to celebrate the holidays in her new home last year but, sadly, her “gotcha day” has been delayed due to injury and needed corrective surgery. Shortly before a meet and greet with her new adopters, Daisy Mae began favoring one of her hind legs. Subsequent examinations, X-rays and an orthopedic consultation revealed bilateral ACL tears in her rear legs, one more significant than the other. Our rescue was faced with three options: (1) provide cage rest in hopes of healing without surgery, (2) surgically repair the knee with significant tearing, or (3) surgically repair both knees. Knowing Daisy Mae’s energy level and her breed’s proneness to this type of injury, we knew that the best course of action for Daisy Mae was to address both knees surgically. Any other choice would be kicking the can down the road. So, on January 4, 2021, Daisy Mae underwent Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy surgery of both knees at SW Florida Veterinary Specialists and she is now on 8-12 weeks of rest and recovery (including physical therapy). The rescue cost for Daisy Mae’s surgery alone was $5,533.91. This amount does not include needed follow up exams, new X-rays, or medication refills.

So how does a small and new rescue like ours pay for a significant and unexpected medical cost like this? We paid what we could up front and put the rest on a credit card. That’s the reality of rescue life and reflects our commitment to each and every one of our rescue dogs. If you know anything about us, you know that we are a rescue that does not simply pull cute puppies, small dogs or the easily adoptable ones. We rescue those who often require more medical or emotional support than the average dog before they are ready to transition from homeless to homed. We pull for the underdog because we believe that every hopeful heart deserves a happy home and we rely entirely on donations to do so. So, if you like and support what we do, please consider sharing Daisy Mae’s story and making a tax deductible donation to help with her medical costs and further our rescue efforts. Every dollar and donation helps no matter how small.

Thank you for reading and sharing Daisy Mae's story.  We will post photos & updates on her progress.
