Our mother so loved to read that as a young girl she devoured Nancy Drew mysteries as soon as they arrived in the mail - no matter how much her mother admonished her to “go slow, make them last.”
She had a particular fondness for mysteries – Erle Stanley Gardner, James Patterson, Agatha Christie. But she loved Zane Grey Westerns, Jan Karon’s Mitford series, Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women, the Bobbsey Twins.
She read travel books, romances, the Reader’s Digest, biographies, thrillers – often rotating between them. Our family subscribed to two daily newspapers, a weekly one and a national news magazine.
Reading is a love she passed on to us – we knew she wasn’t serious when she called upstairs to turn off the light and get to sleep. And later she passed it on to our children. A highlight of visiting grandma was the chance to go book shopping with her.
Reading was also foundational to her 32-year career teaching at Oxford’s Daniel Axford Elementary School.
So, in honor of mom’s passion for books and in recognition of her recent passing, we have established the Kathryn Poulson Children’s Literacy Fund. It will be used to buy books for elementary classrooms in the school where she taught for so many years.
If you’ve ever borrowed a book from a library, here’s your chance to return it with interest.
It will be a lucky kid who gains the payoff.
