If you know anything about my mom Katie Paterson's life or story, you know that she's a fighter. Born premature, raised a foster kid, on her own at 16, she built a life and a family without a road map, fiercely loved and supported her husband and children despite her own battles with depression, eating disorders, and PTSD, and through it all was a loving and selfless support to the friends who loved her.
When she was diagnosed with Stage III breast cancer, I remember that a part of me thought, "Really? Hasn't she been through enough? Hasn't she proven her toughness? Doesn't she deserve a break?" But we know that no one deserves this diagnosis or the upheaval that it brings.
Still, I wasn't surprised at all at the way that she fought. Through chemo, a double mastectomy, and radiation, she never stopped singing God's praise or expressing hope despite her pain and exhaustion.
We are so blessed that Mom currently shows no evidence of cancer, but cancer ravages more than one’s body and the bills are still piling up. She has another surgery coming up that cannot wait, and we recently learned that her insurance company made a clerical error that raised her out of pocket maximum from the already daunting $7000 to $9000. Medical bills have taxed their credit cards, and a fixed income means that every month is a challenge to juggle the costs of her treatment with groceries and incidentals.
Any donations would be greatly appreciated and would allow my parents to meet their out of pocket maximum, pay down the credit cards they used to pay for her treatment, and offset the cost of groceries, which is a stress and strain on a weekly basis as Mom tries to eat a more nutritious diet to support her continued health and wellness.
