Karma Yoga Outreach, Inc. 2017

About Us:
Karma Yoga Outreach began in 2013 as an idea for a model of delivering yoga to the community. Harriet Roberts, a yoga instructor and former lawyer and law professor, Cheryl Chaffee, Director of Garden of the Heart Yoga Center and Betsey Downing, Founder of Garden of the Heart Yoga collaborated on a concept intended to broaden the work of yoga professionals to serve the larger community.

Why Yoga?
Those who engage in yoga practice are familiar with the compassionate engagement of the body, mind and spirit to enhance one’s own personal health and happiness. However, there are many in our community who have experienced trauma, disease, mental disorders, and pain: people who mostly likely would never go to a yoga class due to lack of access or exposure to yoga: people who could benefit from yoga the most. We set out to initiate programs of specialized therapeutic yoga to targeted groups in the community.

What will the funds benefit?

Karma Yoga Outreach currently has three on-going programs: Connected Warriors Yoga for Veterans; Yoga for Children with Special Needs; and Yoga for 12 Step Recovery.

Yoga for Children with Special Needs. $12,000 will fund one full school year of yoga for Children with Special Needs, who have Autism, Aspergers, Sensory Integration Disorders and other mental developmental disabilities. $26,000 will fund two school years and special yoga equipment including props, meditation aides, yoga mats and Haberman spheres. Our program, currently in its third school year, serves 65 children with mental disabilities, ages 6 through 22, every school morning. The program is in its now in its fourth year at McKay Academy in Bradenton and has served more than 125 children.

Connected Warriors Yoga for Veterans. $5000 will fund one year of the current progam of Connected Warriors Yoga for Veterans, currently offering 2 FREE classes per week. $10,000 will fund the program’s expansion to 4 FREE classes per week. Connected Warriors is a specialized trauma conscious yoga developed specifically for veterans including those suffering from PTSD, traumatic brain injury, combat stress, depression and physical disability. The program has served over 175 veterans and immediate family members or caregivers.

Y12SR, The Yoga of Twelve Step Recovery. $10,000 will fund a year of Y12SR, for those grappling with addiction recovery and those who love them. Our program is two years old and offers four FREE classes per week at three locations. Over 100 registrants have been served.
