In late February 2017, Karen started to feel unwell, was subsequently admitted to St. Joseph’s Hospital and released after roughly one week in hospital. Within one month, mummy was admitted to Medical Associates for an outbreak of a condition called pyoderma gangrenosum, the same condition which affected her some 37 years earlier. She began treatment for that during her one week stay in hospital with continuing outpatient care for months until the outbreak completely healed.

During the summer months of 2017, mummy began to again feel unwell and after multiple tests and evaluation, it was discovered that she had a uterine mass. After two unsuccessful attempts to biopsy the mass, she, along with her Doctors at UHWI, decided to schedule her for a hysterectomy later in the year. On December 8th 2017, mummy underwent what should have been a routine hysterectomy and immediately developed a number of complications including, but not limited to: a delay in normal recovery post-surgery, pneumonia, repeated bacterial infections, and pyoderma gangrenosum attacking the wound. As a result of her treatment, mummy has also developed Type II Diabetes.

After believing that worst was over, mummy suffered a massive bleed and lost 60% of her blood supply at the end of June 2018, which resulted in ICU admission and multiple blood transfusions. On July 5th , 2018, after seven months in hospital, mummy was discharged and returned home where she started to regain her strength. Unfortunately, in early August 2018, mummy suffered class II heart failure, was diagnosed with valvular heart disease and was readmitted for 5 days. Within two weeks of discharge, mummy began to deteriorate in cognitive and day to day functions. She was then taken by ambulance to UHWI in Kingston, Jamaica where she remains today admitted on the female medical ward.

As you can imagine, the last year and a half has been very challenging for mummy mostly as well as those caring for her. Without health insurance, medical care can costs accumulate very quickly and we have accumulated immense medical bills and expenses during this time as well as for full time live-in care for mummy. We would like to ensure that she continues to receive the best possible medical care and we require a little assistance. This campaign has been created to help us to continue taking care of her.
