Vision and Mission

Our vision is a world where young people are healthy, educated and free to create and imagine, taking pride and contributing to their communities in a positive manner.

Our mission is to provide education to young people who are unable to attend school in the Philippines. We do this work by convening, engaging, mobilizing and supporting hip-hop artists and trained educators in the Philippines who have groups of young people currently engaged in hip-hop practices (dance and music), and by advocating for Kapayapaan across the world, through organisations global network of hip-hop artists and affiliates.

Our Journey So Far

KAPAYAPAAN began as a group of local and international hip-hop artists teaching dance in community, and realising that to create a bigger change it would take more than just dance! We believed that with an education built on top of a hip-hop mentality would enable young people to dream bigger and believe in themselves as future leaders. We started with English and dance classes, which quickly expanded to English, math, art and dance. A team of teachers and volunteers slowly built into a large family of amazing people who are very dedicated to the project! The team is supported by contributing members in the UK, Australia and the Philippines.

We will begin its EIGHTH term on February, 2018. The project has grown to engage approximately 50 students each weekend in our key locations, Marikina and Baclaran in Manila. During this time, the tutors and volunteers have created meaningful relationships with the communities of Marikina and Baclaran. The project has the full support of the community!

There have been some particularly amazing transformations of students within the program, one of which is shared below by one of our amazing teachers:

“Every session was memorable. But most of all, it was through the collective effort of the teachers and the volunteers that three students from Baclaran were finally able to read. It is of my perspective that when a child already learns to read, that he is no longer ignorant of the ways of the world.”

At the end of term seven, the team convened to decide how we could continue improving the project for the future, while we work towards our major goal of the first hip-hop school in the Philippines! Some key responses from our team on the ground were as follows:

“Indoor space is one of the biggest things we need to fundraise for. Some of the problems we encountered last semester was the typhoons in the Philippines. When it rains hard, it’s hard for the students to focus especially in Marikina, when the water level rises, it’s hard for the kids to focus on the lessons. Another thing is consistent food supply for the kids, it actually motivates them to attend classes because some of the kids have to hustle to get food in a day and hence they miss class.”

As our program grows so fast! We decided that as we work towards our major goals, it was time we ask our global community to contribute to ensuring that KAPAYAPAAN has the scope to continue its success, and provide the best possible service to the young people in need!

Our Objectives

To improve the quality of our outreach program by leasing a permanent location for our classes, that can be accessed by our two key locations plus many more!

To provide opportunities for young achievers in the program to engage with partnering organisations across Asia-Pacific, first by an exchange project between Australia and the Philippines, to foster strength and resilience in the young people of Kapayapaan project.

How Will We Do It?

The funds raised on GoFundMe will go towards seeding the following upgrades to the program:

·        Leasing a building to run classes and social enterprise that will make the project sustainable

·        Providing healthy lunches for all attending students

·        Subisidising travel expenses of our teachers and volunteers

·        School supplies, including text books and stationary for our students

·        Seed-funding to begin planning a social enterprise business that will employ our local people and sustain the project.

We sincerely appreciate any contribution you can make to KAPAYAPAAN! We unite with our brothers and sisters across of the global HIP-HOP community, and extend our love to all walks of life!
