Kansas to Vic - Bushfire Relief
My family and friends at home...
This is a very real and very scary time here in Australia, and there are volunteers, fire fighters, people through all walks of life, children, and wildlife that need your help.
New South Wales is currently in a state of emergency.
Victoria (where Laurie and I live) is also currently in a state of emergency.
Some days the city has low visibility and you cannot see down the street and the closest fires are a 2-3 hour drive away.
If you cannot see 1.5 kilometers in front of you, you should be wearing a mask.
Nationally more than 6.3 million hectares of land have been affected by the fires. (This is more land than the Californian and Amazon bushfires combined)
The fires are now the size of 2/3 of the UK and larger than Belgium in geographic size
18 people have died
1300 houses have been destroyed
More than half a billion animals have lost their lives
Koalas are now on the endangered species list
The smoke is so thick in some towns that breathing the air is equivalent to smoking a pack of cigarettes a day
Your help is needed!
The men and women fighting the bushfires are largely volunteers. They are taking unpaid leave to help these their communities whilst in a state of emergency.
Towns are being evacuated with families leaving everything behind.
Some families have been left stranded in evacuation centers awaiting food.
Every little bit helps! Please donate what you can, forego your cup of coffee on your morning commute, or save that $20 this week to help a family in need.
The volunteers and families here in Victoria and New South Wales need your help, even 9,267 miles away.
This is very real, with friends and their families being affected first-hand and it's very surreal.
Your donations will go to National Red Cross Australia with 100% of the funds going to this organisation. With the help of these donations The Red Cross can continue to deploy over 1,285 trained staff and volunteers to communities. Provide food, water and essential supplies to those people affected by the fires.
Thank-you for reading, thinking, and acting.
