THE MUDDY PUDDLE FUND OUTLINE
OVERVIEW
The Muddy Puddle Fund is a trail maintenance fundraiser where every dollar generated goes directly into trail maintenance at Pineview and Harper Mountain, mountain biked trails, two of the most popular riding areas in Kamloops. The Muddy Puddle Fund is created and administered by Ted Morton, with matching funds from Tourism Kamloops. Ted is a Kamloops resident who advocates for mountain bike trail maintenance and development.
WHAT IS THIS?
The idea is very similar to riding upon a muddy puddle. In Kamloops most riders will see a muddy puddle and choose to go around it - they don't want to get their bike dirty and who knows what's in that puddle! The Muddy Puddle Fund is to bring awareness to the need for stable funding for trail maintenance, development, and advocacy in Kamloops. Much like muddy puddles, the fund is about getting dirty, it's about recognizing the countless hours of volunteers who manage, maintain, and advocate on behalf of all riders. We want to encourage riders to help fund an ever-growing network of trails by recognizing that sometimes we need to get dirty and take care of what we’ve created. Every time you ride around that puddle you create more trail erosion, you increase maintenance, but when you ride through that muddy puddle head-on, we appreciate it (*to a certain extent). So, we're calling on you now, it's time to get dirty, it's time to pitch in.
To be clear, this is not a trail-day, it's not another bike club, this is simply a fundraiser. Unfortunately, you don't get a fun new event, a free t-shirt or any other sort of offset, just a simple feel-good to know that you’re helping fund maintenance in two of the most popular riding networks, Pineview and Harper. To be clear, 100% of the funds go directly into paying for a trail maintenance person to take care of those muddy puddles, fallen trees, unsustainable trails, brake bumps, and other imperfections in our trails.
THE GOAL
Our goal is to raise $10,000 (that's only 1000 people donating $10.00 each!) annually for trails in Kamloops. This will fund a full or part-time trail maintenance person to maintain the trails at Harper and Pineview
ABOUT THE CREATOR OF THE FUND
My livelihood is based on mountain bikes and trails and I’ve personally been involved and witnessed the tremendous efforts volunteers exude in order to make mountain biking happen in our community. As a rider in Kamloops, I've taken advantage of our awesome trails. Riding my bike way too much and not pitching in enough to do that tedious maintenance like fixing brake bumps/ruts, benching trails, weed whacking, raking, installing signs and the list goes on. My full-time career is designing trails as a Trails Technologist and putting on mountain bike events through the BC and Candian Enduro Series. If there is one thing I’ve learned, it's that paid trail maintenance people are professionals and their work is critical to the sustainable development of any trail network. Trail maintenance is also something that makes riding more enjoyable and reduces the barrier to entry for newer riders.
This is why I'm looking to create a fund. There's a time and place for volunteerism and there's a time and place for funds. Right now Kamloops trails are in need of funding. There are some stellar volunteers working hard, but what they lack is capital. This funding will hire a local person to do the detailed maintenance work that is needed to keep our trails prime!
DETAILS ABOUT THE MUDDY PUDDLE
Why do only Pineview and Harper receive maintenance funding?
- The Bike Ranch receives funding from the City of Kamloops and has two seasonal maintenance people already employed. Pineview and Harper are both sanctioned trail networks and are two of the most popular riding destinations, they are crucial riding areas for our community.
-We have two not-for-profit community groups that support riding in town. The Kamloops Bike Riders Association (KBRA) who run community cycling events for all ages and work to maintain Lac du Bois/Dufferin Kids Loop and Stake Lake MTB Trails and the Kamloops Performance Cycling Centre (KPCC) who are the trail managers for the Bike Ranch, Harper Mountain, Isobel Lake and Pineview, our most popular riding areas.
-Currently, the KBRA collects membership fees however, approximately 8% of the fees collected go towards trail maintenance at Pineview, Harper, Isobel lake or the Kamloops Bike Ranch. *To be verified by KBRA*
-The KPCC board of directors works tirelessly to apply for grants, lobby for funds and currently, they have the capacity to continue, however, extra funding will improve existing trails and build capacity for the future. In 2021, the KPCC submitted grants for two major projects that totaled more than $1.5M, unfortunately, both grants were unsuccessful due to a lack of matching funds and competition from other applicants.
- All funds raised will go toward extending the contract of the trails maintenance person hired by to the Kamloops Performance Cycling Centre for their trail management programs at Pineview and Harper Mountain as they are the legally approved trail managers. (We’re not encouraging rogue building!).
-The KPCC has already hired a trails maintenance person (Kim Guiget) for two months starting April 1st (thank you to those who donated), the Muddy Puddle Fund will extend the trail maintenance work throughout the summer. *Note*: In 2020, Ted was hired for this position and completed 300 hours of trail maintenance between Harper and Pineview.
How does the fund support trail maintenance?
-Every dollar donated automatically goes to the KPCC Trails Maintenance person directly to extend their contract based on the amount of money raised.
- Unfortunately, charitable tax receipts are not available, however, we can still give you a receipt!
- In-kind donations are accepted if they are in the forms of: earthmoving machinery, trail tools (pulaski, rake (fan and hard), chainsaw gas, chainsaw chains, bar oil, PPE and other trail-related materials), contact Ted Morton
WHO'S BEHIND THIS PROJECT
- This project will receive matched funds in a 2:1 ratio from Tourism Kamloops, up to $2500! That means if we raise $5000, we get an additional $2500 from Tourism Kamloops!!!
- This initiative is independent of the KBRA and KPCC. It is developed and organized 100% by Ted Morton.
- Ted Morton is a resident of Kamloops the owner of the Canadian Enduro Series.
- The project is managed by Ted Morton, Kamloops Resident, and owner of the Canadian Enduro Series, it is supported by Tourism Kamloops and the KPCC has agreed to extend the contract of the trails maintenance person based on this fundraiser.
