Mentoring Program - Youth for Peace

On July 27th, 2013 we lost our precious 17 year old family member Kamau Chandler to gun violence.  Out of our grief and despair we decided to take action to help heal our community from this madness.  We hold a Conference for youth then follow up and provide them with trained mentors.   At this Conference we address such issues as Conflict Resolution, Anger Management, Bullying, Misogyny, Gangs, and How to Behave If Stopped by Police, etc.   After the conference those youth who identify as willing to work with a mentor will be matched with one.   A study by the Big Brothers & Big Sisters organization revealed children with mentors were:  46 % less likely to begin using illegal drugs; 27% less likely to begin using alcohol; 53% less likely to skip school; and 33% less likely to engage in school violence.   This confirms that mentoring can change the trajectory of young lives. 

The odds against our youth are overwhelming and multi-layered.  Additionally, they are exposed to a saturation of violence through radio, tv, media, video games.  They need guidance, direction and support.  One of the best known effective responses to address this need is mentoring.  "It takes a village..."  Mentors are the village.    

THIS IS SOMETHING WE CAN DO FOR OURSELVES.  We are not asking for outside help.
