Kaitlin's Fall Tuition at WPI Fundraiser

Donation protected
Hi, everyone. My name is Kaitlin Mason. I am a rising junior at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in Worcester, MA majoring in physics. My goal is to further my education through undergraduate school and graduate school to one day become an astrophysicist, investigating some of the universe’s most misunderstood problems.

Backstory:

My parents are currently going through the divorce process. My mom has been a stay-at-home mom my entire life, raising my sister and I. My dad left us last fall, and we have no income other than the small checks he is forced to send. When I was first accepted to WPI, my dad was very excited since he is a WPI physics alumnus himself and said he would support my decision to follow in his footsteps. He said he would cover my tuition throughout undergrad. Today, August 12, 2020 (the day before tuition is due), he told me he would not cover my tuition this upcoming fall.

I have supported myself financially this past year with the exception of school tuition. I have picked up a part-time job working for a solar panel company, and I just completed a summer research internship ran by WPI that I applied to back in the spring.

Why I am a good investment:

I am a fantastic candidate because I am an exceptional student who goes above and beyond what is expected. I have a large list of achievements:

I have received Dean’s List recognition for all four semesters at WPI. I received the Charles O. Thompson Scholar Award for superior first-year academic excellence, which is awarded to the top one-third of WPI’s freshman class. I am also the recipient of WPI’s Presidential Scholarship, which is awarded based on academic performance in high school, recommendations, leadership, extracurricular involvement, and community service. I am second flute in both WPI’s concert band and orchestra, have marched for two years in the WPI Marching & Pep Band, and am a member of the flute choir. I am an undergraduate summer research intern studying interstellar molecular cloud formation with a research team at WPI and will be continuing my research into the upcoming school year. I also have applied to teaching assistantships (TA) in physics for the fall semester.

I am doing all I can to cover my living expenses for my apartment, renter’s insurance, utilities, groceries, gas, and wear and tear on my car, but I do not have the funds to cover my tuition. Because of my situation, I do not have the time to apply for loans to cover the cost of tuition. I am typically a very private person so my situation may come as a surprise to some of you that know me. It is very difficult for me to reach out for help, but I do not have a choice.

If you support me, you are supporting women in STEM to pursue their dreams and aspirations. My birthday is in less than a month and this would be the greatest gift I could ask for. Every little bit helps. Every share on social media helps. When I am older and have the financial ability, I will pay it forward to help others in a similar situation to me.

I have linked my Linkedin profile below and my summer research project below for anyone interested. Thank you for considering my cause.
