Kai Luca Lopez Kendall was born March 24th, 2017 at 9:15 a.m. weighing only 2 kilograms and measuring at 16.5 inches long.
Becoming pregnant was one of the most joyous times of our lives, little did we know the complications that would arise. Everything was going well until the 20th week ultrasound scan, when our doctor informed us that the tests came back abnormal. Being the optimistic people that we are, we kept assuring ourselves everything was fine and that it was just a glitch in in the scans.
We were referred to a pediatric cardiologist who then confirmed that our unborn baby boy was diagnosed with Tetralogy de Fallot, which is a condition where there are 4 congenital heart defects. He was not growing in the belly and had severe intrauterine growth restriction and at 35 weeks they told us we needed an emergency C-section. Right after cutting the umbilical cord, which was wrapped around his neck twice, they rushed baby Kai Luca in an ambulance to the Childrens’ Hospital immediately. He was examined and diagnosed with a Ventricular Sepal Defect, Atrial Sepal Defect and Pulmonary Atresia. Since he was so tiny, even premature clothes were too big for him. Our amazing team of doctors at Childen’s Hospital have been so supportive. We live 6 ½ hours away from the hospital, so commuting every couple weeks for doctor check-ups have taken a toll. Kai will undergo Open Heart Surgery in early January 2018 ,only once he is strong enough to do so.
First of all, we most humbly and sincerely ask for your prayers for Kai's health & recovery in the next coming months. Secondly, we ask for your prayers to keep Alvaro and I strong together during this stressful time. Lastly, as you can imagine, this will have a significant financial impact on our family as we maintain the medical expenses, traveling and moving expenses, months of not being able to work and a myriad of other expenses.
