Hi, my name is Ariel and I’ve set up this fundraiser to help a good friend of mine get top surgery in order for them to continue their medical transition from female to male. I met Dmitri about two years ago through mutual friends and our shared love of the show Supernatural via the internet. Since then we’ve spent countless hours talking to each other, doing weird things for charity and more. I can easily say he has become one of my greatest friends and my life is brighter with him in and I can guarantee you that others would say the same. His heart is full of love and kindness. Since he has begun his transition just a little over a year ago not only has he obviously changed physically but he has dramatically changed mentally. I’ve noticed that he has become happier then ever now that he has become closer to being his true self and has come out of his shell. I’m asking you to help me continue to make that happen and letting him become free by getting this surgery.
A letter from Dmitri:
Hi, I’m Dmitri and I’m a trans man! I’ve been medically transitioning for a year now on testosterone and now it’s time for the next step in my medical transition: a double mastectomy and chest reconstruction, also called top surgery.
I need top surgery to eliminate the dysphoria I experience with my body, as well as to finally stop wearing binders, a compression garment that helps bind my chest to help me present as male. These binders should only be worn for about 8 to 12 hours, but I generally must wear them longer for that. They restrict my breathing and blood flow, as well as cause muscle and back pain, and are incredibly hot. I have a physically active job and the heat causes trouble in my work performance. The long period of activity in the heat gives me painful sores where the edges of the material rub against my skin, such as my underarms. With how my body is built, I also wear out binders fairly quickly and must frequently replace them.
With top surgery, I will finally be able to move about and live freely, and pursue my career without the fear of my binder failing on the job and without the physical pain caused by binding on the job. I will also be able to help reduce risks to my health, as well as finally be able to be legally identified as male.
In order to do this, I will need your help. I will be scheduling surgery with Dr. Garramone in Davie, Florida. I will need a $500 deposit to schedule, and I will need to pay Dr. Garramone $6,000 four weeks prior to my surgery. I won’t schedule the surgery until I have $6,500 available collectively from my own savings, your donations, and other sources. The surgery will total $8,200 with the hospital and anesthesia fees factored in. I will need to travel from Atlanta to Davie, and stay in Florida for my post-operative appointment a week later. In addition, there will be tests and appointments to clear me for surgery.
Medical transition has allowed me to truly be myself. Since beginning testosterone, my depression has been virtually eliminated. I’ve come out of my shell and it’s incredible to see the progress in my health and in my life a year later. I’m very proud of how far I’ve come and I continue to be determined to realize this wish of mine to wholly be who I am. I’m ready to take this next step in my life and it will mean the world to me to have your support, be it a donation, words of encouragement, or just reaching out to say hello. Asking for help in any capacity is scary and hard. Your support will make a huge difference that I will never forget.
