Mom's Medical Issues

Since February of this year, my mom has been in terrible pain every day. In March, I finally convinced her to go to the ER at which point they discovered she had pylonephritis, or a severe kidney infection, which was a complication from her Crohn's. She has suffered from Crohn's since 1995, and has several operations because of that. We also found out that she had a fractured L3 vertebrae, which was due to her bones becoming weaker due to the long term use of Prednisone, which is the only medication she could take to alleviate some of the symptoms from Crohn's (we tried Humira and Remicade but she ended up being allergic to both). We went to a doctor who gave her a back brace and said it would heal on its own in 4-6 weeks, so she took time off of work to heal. Soon enough, she used all of her FMLA or paid sick leave, and by the end of March she was no longer getting paid. She was still in terrible pain, all day, every day. She couldn't sleep more than a few hours at a time, even with a Fentanyl patch (morphine) and Percocet which she took every 4 hours. We went to the doctor again and asked for a referral to an orthopedic surgeon to see if he had any suggestions. They found out the fracture was even worse than it was before, because she was given the wrong back brace. Now she needed a kyphoplasty, which is where they insert bone cement into the fracture to seal it so she should have felt better quickly. This was done in May. By June 5th, she had to return to work even though she was still in pain. Last Wednesday, I got a call from one of our friends stating that she took my mom to the ER because she was in unbearable pain. It turns out that she had yet another severe kidney infection, and they discovered 5 additional spinal fractures, at L1, L2, L4, L5, and T12 vertebrae. They treated her for the infection and she was discharged 6 days later. Yesterday, July 6th, I went back home to take her to her appointment for the orthopedic surgeon, so we could see how he wanted to proceed. He told us she would need 2 separate surgeries in order to complete all the necessary fill-ins with the bone cement because he could only put so much in at one time. She was experiencing incredible pain from her Crohn's, which is a Crohn's flare. She had a fever and I took her to the ER at that time. Due to other complications from Crohn's, she is having yet another surgery today to try and correct the issue with the infection, and infected tissue. She has missed so much work, and used up all of her paid and unpaid sick leave which means she is no longer getting paid. She cannot apply for disability for 30 days, even though she cannot work and still has bills to pay. Disability will only cover 50-60% of your income, and when you are living paycheck to paycheck, it isn't enough. Unfortunately in June, I moved away to continue my education, therefore I do not have the financial means to help her since I now have my own bills to pay, and cannot work additional hours since I am a full time pre med student. I am asking for any donation to help. I don't want her to suffer any longer, and after 4 months of being in pain every single day, would you want to add the additional stress of being unable to pay the bills? I want to help her all I can. She is all I have. I have no dad. I have no siblings. All I have is my mom. Any donation is immensely appreciated during this difficult time. Desde febrero de este año, mi mamá ha tenido dolor terrible cada día. En marzo, cuando finalmente la convencí ir a la sala de emergencias, descubrieron que tenía pylonephritis, una infección renal grave, que era una complicación de su enfermedad de Crohn. Ella ha sufrido de Crohn desde 1995, y ha tenido varias operaciones debido a eso. También descubrimos que tenía una vértebra L3 fracturada, debido al uso prolongado de Prednisone, el efecto secundario de cual es la debilitación de huesos. Prednisone es la única medicación que puede tomar para aliviar algunos de los síntomas de Crohn, porque al tomar Humira y Remicade, acabó siendo alérgica a ambos. Fuimos a un médico que le dio un soporte de espalda, que nos dijo sanaría sus fracturas en 4-6 semanas, así que ella tomó tiempo fuera del trabajo para sanar.
Mientras descansaba, ella utilizó todo su FMLA o licencia por enfermedad pagada, y al fines de marzo ya no recibía pago. Ella seguía en dolor terrible, todo el día, todos los días. No podía dormir más que unas pocas horas a la vez, a pesar de usar un parche de fentanilo (morfina) y Percocet, que tomaba cada 4 horas, para su dolor.
Fuimos al doctor otra vez y pedimos una referencia médica a un cirujano ortopédico para ver si él tenía alguna sugerencia. Él se dio cuenta que la fractura estaba aún peor de antes, porque le dieron un soporte de espalda incorrecto. Ahora necesitaba cifoplastia, que es donde insertan cemento óseo en la fractura para sellarlo, después de lo cual debería sentirse mejor rápidamente. La cirugía se hizo en mayo. Ella tuvo que volver a trabajar el 5 de junio, aunque todavía estaba en dolor. El 5 de julio, recibí una llamada de uno de nuestras amigas diciendo que ella llevó a mi madre a la sala de emergencias porque estaba en dolor insoportable. Resulta que tuvo otra infección renal grave, y descubrieron 5 fracturas espinales adicionales en las vértebras L1, L2, L4, L5 y T12.
La trataron por la infección y la dieron de alta 6 días después. El 6 de julio, volví a la casa de mi madre para llevarla a su cita con el cirujano ortopédico, para ver cómo quería proceder. Nos dijo que necesitaría dos cirugías separadas para completar todos los rellenos necesarios con el cemento óseo, porque sólo podía poner tanto cada cirugía. Ella sufría un dolor increíble porque su Crohn se recrudeció. Tuvo fiebre y la llevé a la sala de emergencias. Debido a otras complicaciones de Crohn, ella tuvo otra cirugía el 7 de julio para tratar de corregir el problema con la infección, y el tejido infectado.
Ella ha faltado tanto trabajo, y ha gastado todas sus horas de enfermedad pagadas y sus horas sin pago, lo cual significa que ya no recibe pago. Ella no puede aplicar por discapacidad por 30 días más, aunque ella no puede trabajar y todavía tiene cuentas que pagar. La discapacidad sólo cubrirá el 50-60% de sus ingresos, y cuando usted está viviendo cheque a cheque, no es suficiente.
Desafortunadamente en junio, me mudé lejos para continuar mi educación, por lo tanto no tengo los medios financieros para ayudarla puesto que ahora tengo mis propias cuentas que pagar, y no puedo trabajar horas adicionales puesto que soy estudiante de tiempo completo. Cualquier cantidad de donación ayudaría. No quiero que sufra más, y después de 4 meses de estar sufriendo cada día, ¿querría añadir el estrés adicional de no poder pagar las facturas? Quiero ayudarla todo lo que pueda.
