A true Miracle Baby!!! Addyson Strunk is 5 years old. She was born with a Congenital Heart defect. She has Down syndrome. After a couple weeks in the NICU at East TN Children’s Hospital she went into heart failure. She had and AVSD heart repair at 3 months. Atrioventricular septal defects (AVSD) are a relatively common family of congenital heart defects. She had this surgery at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital.
Addy suffered two strokes. The first one was prior to surgery and one during by-pass. Addy’s stay at Vanderbilt was quite lengthy. She had many complications after surgery. She coded on us multiple times. Addy’s strokes left her with paralysis on her left side, which in turn left her blind on the left side of each eye (Homonymous Hemianopsia), unable to walk, talk, and eat. Addy feeds with a feeding tube.
A year after Addy’s open-heart surgery she developed epilepsy secondary to her stoke. Life Star has even flown her to Vanderbilt for uncontrolled seizures. Addy has endured many hospitalizations. She is a fighter and has beaten many odds.
It has not been an easy road, because after the age of 3 supplemental programs are stopped. Therefore, it makes it almost impossible to provide the therapies and services she needs. Her medical bills for prescription formula is $874.00 per month & and many therapies are not covered by private insurance. Addy needs an epileptic bed that her insurance will not cover.
We are also in the process of trying to either modify our van to a handicap van or find a used handicap van. We make many trips a year to Vanderbilt in Nashville and Emory in Atlanta.
God has blessed our family through Addy’s adventure. It may not be an easy road, but it’s been a beautiful journey! We are eternally grateful for all who have forever changed our hearts by loving Addy.
