Dylan was diagnosed with an AVM shortly after her first birthday. Since then she has had multiple MRIs/MRAs, CT scans, Angiograms, and Embolizations, and hospital stays. When she was just barely 5 years old she had a resection surgery (Craniotomy) to eradicate the AVM. The procedure mostly worked, but she is not out of the woods yet. She still has a part of inoperable AVM near her brain stem. Dylan has also suffered a small stroke and hydrocephalus as a result of these surgeries and must be in therapy for these things as well.
Every year the Tolen family hits their deductible and co-pays with insurance, both in-network and out-of-network, because of these routine yearly tests and her ongoing therapy. One MRI/MRA costs a little over $6K. She must have an MRI/MRA once per year until the AVM is gone... whether it be a gamma knife procedure (precise laser radiation to the AVM), another resection surgery (craniotomy), or works of our miraculous God. At this time, she is scheduled for Gamma Knife treatment this summer, shortly before her 8th birthday
