Medical Fellowship Abroad

Donation protected
From a young age, I was given the opportunity to make the important decisions in my life. Whether that be to attend a college or to play high school soccer, my parents allowed me to act independently and to control my destiny. Therefore, teaching me the lesson that if you want something to happen then you must make it possible to happen. I made the decision to be the first-generation college student of my family, to apply for the Atlantis Fellowship Program, and to set my goals to become an emergency room physician.

My name is Matt Jajowka and I am currently a second year student studying Biochemsitry at The Ohio State Universtiy. I have never taken anything easy and have always pushed myself to be a greater person. I put all awards and accomplishments I have earned to the credit of my parents for forcing me to learn how to be my own person. I am forever grateful for them and how they have shaped me into the person that I am today.

The education abroad program that I am attending is the Atlantis Fellowship Program in Lisbon, Portugal for a 4-week period. This program consists of 40+ hours of shadowing experience as well as a cultural immersion in Portugal. During this stay I will be rotated throughout multiple hospitals and through different departments within these hospitals to gain the most experience possible. This tailors to my future goals of attending medical school and becoming an emergency room physician because it will expose me to the different possibilities in medicine. With this exposure, I will be able to narrow down my options and decide that if the emergency department is the correct career for me. This trip will not only expose me to another culture but it will also introduce me to another healthcare system. By being immersed in another health care system, I will gain a different perspective on medicine in contrast to the traditional American one. The Atlantis program provides me with career experience in the fact that I will be able to see the multiple medical professions that exist, as well as providing me with a different cultural experience in a foreign hospital.

I have been overseas one other time as a high school graduation gift to London that was completely paid for by my aunt. I was abroad for 2 weeks exploring the city and taking in everything that there was to take in. After this experience, I have had a burning desire to see the different cultures of the world. Although, with medical school and plenty of studying taking up the next few years of my life I came to realize that this coming summer is my only opportunity to see another part of the vast world. So, I took it upon myself to apply for the Atlantis program in Portugal to see a different culture and to gain shadowing experience so that I can propel myself into the career that I want.

Although I have earned scholarships to attend The Ohio State University, college is still extremely expensive and I have had to take loans out in order to help pay for it. Being apart of this fellowship is something that I have always wanted to do and will also help me recognize my future career path. Any denomination that is donated to me will go towards making my dreams come true and will be appreciated to the greatest extent.
