Jay's Accessible Bathroom Fund

Donation protected
This is Jay.

In 1998 he was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS).  His nerve pathways began to deteriorate.  There is no cure for MS.  Jay gradually lost the use of both his legs, and most control of his left hand. He got his first wheelchair sometime in 2011. Now he cannot stand on his own. He can’t get into his shower. He can’t reach the faucet in his sink.  He urgently needs an accessible bathroom.

Jay used to be a very active person. He attended college on a full 4-year basketball scholarship. He was an officer in the Marine Corps.  Surfing was his passion, and he traveled up and down the west coast of America in search of the best spots.

Now, Jay handles his continuing physical deterioration with aplomb!  He practices positivity constantly. He turns every setback into a blessing.  “I am really going to enjoy doing THAT when they find the cure...” is one of his favorite phrases.

Jay has a great sense of humor. Double vision is really common with MS patients. One day, to his (one) dog, he said: “You’re a cute little puppy, and YOU are a cute little puppy” (pointing to each of the two dogs he sees).  Then, to me, he said “I don’t want to show favoritism.”

How does he deal with losing his previous hobbies?  He got new ones!

Jay has lots of brothers and sisters who help him all the time.  We are helping him set up this campaign!  He would like to express how grateful he is to all the people in his life for all the support they give him.  Jay has lost a lot, but he never dwells on the dark side of things.  He's always positive, always looking forward, always enjoying what he has. Right now he relies on Visiting Angels from the veteran's bureau to bathe him and brush his teeth.  There is not enough space in any of our bathrooms for him to bathe, so he rides in his wheelchair to the local fitness club to use their showers.  We need to fix his bathroom so he can take care of these things himself.
