Transplant Travel Expenses

Donation protected
Justin is a 25 year old that was born visually impaired caused by a condition called Leber's Congenital Amorosis.  Around age 19 - 20, he started experiencing problems with his kidneys which we also found out to be linked to the Leber's. On September 23, 2014; Justin was admitted to the hospital to begin dialysis. He has continued these treatments 3 days a week for the last 3 1/2 years. At that time he was also added to the National Organ Donor list. Until about 9 months ago, he was just hanging out on the list with no activity.  Sometime in August/ September 2017 we received our first call. There was a kidney available and he was to be on alert for up to 24 hours for a return call notifying us if he would be the recipient. Well at 23 hrs and 59 secs that call came, Unfortunately, Justin didn't receive the kidney.  But we knew he was now at the "top" of the list and calls would be more frequent. The next call would come in February 2018 where he was told the same thing, be on alert for a call. The turn around time was much quicker this time (within an hour) and again it was a "no-go" for Justin. The kidney has some antibodies that the transplant team didn't feel would be received well by Justin's body. Fast forward to March 19, 2018.....We receive a 3rd call, this time telling us to come to UAB as a secondary recipient. We arrived in Birmingham around 11:30 pm eastern time. Once registered we waited for a room. Then once in the room; we awaited labs, x-rays and a shower. They wanted him ready in case the primary recipient was unable to receive the kidney. Nurses and doctors and techs were in and out of the room well into the early morning hours so there was no sleep. Mid morning we were told the surgery was to begin at 7:00 am but it would be an hour to an hour and half before we would know anything about the transplant success for the primary; so we waited some more.  Around noon, we were given the news that the surgery was a success and we would be discharged. Although we were disappointed that this again was not Justin's time; we realize that it sometimes is a 2 - 3 trip process before we are successful at being the primary recipient. Knowing that Justin's time is near, and that we will be looking at a week stay post-transplant in the hospital and another 2 weeks residing in Birmingham for follow-ups; there will be travel, lodging and meal expenses for him and a traveling companion. In the past the housing was provided by the hospital but the facility has become obsolete and no longer an option. Whatever you can give would be a blessing to us, even your prayers. May God bless you as you consider this request. #THIS WILL BE JUSTIN'S YEAR!
