What do you know about the SCLC? Are you aware of how instrumental they were to the civil rights movement of the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s? From the Montgomery Bus Boycott to the sit-ins, from the March on Washington to the civil rights acts, the SCLC and its members led the charge or played a pivotal role in most of the civil rights achievements during that era. Remarkably, the leaders were mostly in their twenties and late teens, the youth of their time. What many do not know, and even fewer knew before seeing Ava DuVernay’s multi-award nominated film “Selma,” produced by Oprah Winfrey, is that the tactics utilized to achieve civil rights successes were thoroughly planned-out, practiced, organized and local. Those tactics are waiting to be used with great success, again, under the leadership of our youth.
Join us on our journey to reinvigorate the SCLC and introduce its successful tactics to new generations of leaders.
On this journey, we will use the power of music, specifically hiphop, to reach and encourage our youth. Music was always a major element of the fight for civil rights and justice. From Mahalia Jackson’s rendition of the folk song, “We Shall Overcome,” to Sam Cooke’s, “A Change Is Gonna Come,” from Billie Holiday’s rendition of the poem, “Strange Fruit,” to James Brown’s, “Say It Loud,” having inspirational music performed at events helped civil rights organizations raise funds and get the message out. During long marches, songs were sung to motivate the marchers. And music was also used for psychological strength to help endure the harassment and brutality during the march, or simply to pass the time while waiting for direction or the next move.
At the end of this initial phase of our journey we will establish a presence with our youth at the intersection of civil rights activism and hiphop music and entertainment.

WHO ARE WE?
SCLC Youth Outreach Music & Entertainment Division: A team of business professionals with experience in civil justice activism, business, law, and entertainment managing the Youth Outreach Division of the SCLC. We plan to engage and train young people on the proven methods of non-violent activism, utilizing the power of music and entertainment.
WHAT ARE WE DOING?
Our Vision is to introduce the SCLC to new generations of young activists, entrepreneurs, and leaders in America, and worldwide, through the power of music entertainment.
Our Mission is to develop a Music & Entertainment Division under the SCLC umbrella, as a vehicle to attain our Vision.
Our first initiative is the Justice HipHop Project:
We will produce and promote justice hiphop music.
WHY ARE WE DOING IT?
To give our youth alternative avenues to channel their musical talents and desire for civil justice activism, while promoting SCLC’s methods of non-violent action to achieve social, economic & political justice for all to society at large.
HOW ARE WE GOING TO DO IT?
The initial step on our journey includes securing a plan for a music and entertainment division of the SCLC to produce and promote justice hip-hop music. After completing a business, marketing and artist development plan to set up Justice HipHop Music, we plan to release the single, “Fight On,” by our first artist, Zaria Hall, with a featured rapper.
WHERE ARE WE GOING TO DO IT?
We will be located at SCLC’s Atlanta headquarters.
WHEN ARE WE GOING TO DO IT?
Our goal is to launch by Summer 2018.
WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU TO DO IT.
Initially we need your financial support. Your donations will go towards our development of the plan to set up Justice HipHop Music under the SCLC Youth Outreach Music & Entertainment Division. All amounts raised in addition to the amount requested, will be placed in an escrow account to be used to fund the plan once completed.
WHAT YOU WILL RECEIVE.
In return for your donation, you will receive an official correspondence from the SCLC to be used for tax purposes, and you will automatically become a member of our Fan VIP list serve. Fan VIP members will be able to hear and see our productions before their official

SCLC BACKGROUND INFO:
The Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) is a nonprofit, non-sectarian, inter-faith, advocacy organization that is committed to nonviolent action to achieve social, economic, and political justice. The SCLC consists of localized chapters and affiliates that are located throughout the country. The SCLC chapters and affiliates support the organization by working in their respective communities to implement national programs (such as voter registration, improvement of education and direct action against any form of injustice or inequitable treatment) and stand as an advocate for those on the margins of society.
Founded on January 10, 1957, by Bayard Rustin, Martin Luther King, Jr., Joseph E. Lowery, Ralph D. Abernathy, Fred Shuttlesworth, Charles K. Steele, Sr., and Ella Baker, the first president was Martin Luther King, Jr. Abernathy took the helm upon King’s assassination, and Lowery followed Abernathy. King’s son, Martin Luther King, III, later served as president, followed by Fred Shuttlesworth. Currently Charles Steele, Jr. is the president and his leadership has revitalized this historic and important organization.
SCLC Mission: In the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the SCLC is renewing its commitment to bring about the promise of “one nation, under God, indivisible” together with the commitment to activate the “strength to love” within the community of humankind.
SCLC Focus: The organizational focus of the SCLC is to promote spiritual principles within our membership and local communities; to educate youth and adults in the areas of personal responsibility, leadership potential, and community service; to ensure economic justice and civil rights in the areas of discrimination and affirmative action; and to eradicate environmental classism and racism wherever it exists.
SCLC Current Initiatives: International Poor People’s Campaign , Kingian Non-Violence Training , Voter Rights (Registration, Education, and Anti-Suppression), Justice for Girls (human trafficking), SCLC Today (YouTube Channel), Annual Conferences and a Magazine . The 59th Annual Conference will take place on July 20-22, 2017 at The Peabody Memphis in Memphis, TN.
