Misty's Law

Marianne Griego was in AZ taking care of her father.  On the morning of the fire, Marianne received an ominous call from an ex-boyfriend allegedly stating that "everything she loved was gone in a fire!" She quickly notified the landlord, her exes Mother, about the phone call from her son. The landlord and her husband were the first one's at the scene of the fire.  They stated to the fire crew that a "faulty air conditioning unit" was the cause of the fire.  Marianne was grief stricken at the fact that Misty was buried without her permission. She insisted that Misty's body be immediately exhumed.  She bravely stood by patiently waiting as freshly packed earth was removed by a back hoe. Once she saw Misty's charred little body, she jumped into the 5ft deep hole and wrapped her beloved pet in Misty's blanket in order to cremate her.  That is the unconditional love a pet owner has for there family member.

After months of investigating, the Espanola Fire Marshall's office has charged Marianne's ex with allegedly causing the arson and committing extreme cruelty to an animal. The alleged arsonist was in police custody as of Sept. 17th 2020.

So now that real battle begins....  Marianne and her friend's are raising money in order to pursue compensatory damages against the family for the loss of all of her belongings and for the cruel manner in which Misty was murdered. After 9 year's of being a good tenant, the landlord and her family have yet to acknowledge the harm done to Marianne, or offer to pay for displacement costs incurred by the arson.  Life has not been easy since the fire, Marianne currently pays for a hotel room while working in Santa Fe. The only belongings she was able to retrieve from the aftermath of the fire was a hand painted jewelry box by her granddaughter who has leukemia, and a few precious family photos.

Because of the overwhelming grief caused by Misty's death, Marianne is currently working on strengthening the existing NM Animal Cruelty laws which doesn't consider pet's as family.  The new bill which will be proposed in this upcoming legislative sessions will be called Misty's Law.

Thank you for your prayers, shares, and donations!  We can all help Marianne rebuild a new life and make sure our precious pet's are considered family members by lawmakers by passing Misty's Law.
