Justice for Heather Campbell

Donation protected
Friends and family have come together to bring justice for Heather Campbell, least we forget the story of a helpless young woman left to die. We are asking to raise money as we pursue what is still an open investigation, and to also construct a proper memorial in her honor.

Heather’s Life:

Heather Campbell lived an exceptional life from an early age. Heather prevailed through foster care and strived academically her entire life. She maintained a 4.0 through high school, taking all AP classes, and into college at The Ohio State University. After starting her degree in psychology at OSU she enlisted in the Navy. Heather was so skilled, and her math skills so excellent, that she was automatically accepted into the Nuclear Program as a Nuclear Engineer Mate. She was the shining and breathtaking definition of brains and beauty. But it was her humility that truly touched the lives of many. Upon returning to OSU to finish her psychology degree, Heather dreamed of working as a school psychologist. Due to her own extenuating life circumstances she had a higher level of empathy towards the world around her. Heather’s rare mixture of innate intelligence, ambition, and a truly loving heart deeply impacted her fellow human beings.

Heather’s Death:

The story of our beloved daughter, friend, cousin, and sister, Heather Campbell is one all too familiar for millions of women across the world. At the tender age of 22, Heather was brutally shot and killed by her boyfriend in their apartment. But Heather’s story differs from that of most other victims of domestic violence: the police played a negligent role in her death.

In the early hours of September 17th concerned neighbors called the police and apartment managers to report arguing and subsequent gunshots. Witnesses pleaded with the police and apartment staff to investigate the situation and do a welfare check on their neighbor. The officers knocked on Heather’s apartment, and in hearing no response decided to leave the scene of the crime, all the while Heather was bleeding out right on the other side of the door. Heather had a potential window of being saved. But to no avail were the neighbors able to convince the police that a crime had been committed. The police did not bother to take any steps to insure her safety or that of the other residents in the building. One of the most heart wrenching details of this investigation is that Heather’s apartment door was left unlocked during the time of her murder, and the next day a friend turned the handle of their unlocked door and found Heather and her boyfriend’s slain bodies laying right in front of her from an apparent murder-suicide.

Heather’s death speaks to many systemic and troubling problems in our law enforcement, legal system, and society at large. We hope to work towards enacting changes that will ensure the safety of all domestic violence victims in times of danger. Please know that your donations will be used to help prevent Heather from dying in vain, and will allow friends and family to move forward with tirelessly fighting and advocating for these changes to be made.
