Just a Girl with Big Med School Dreams

Most of you who may visit this page don’t know me, but allow me to introduce myself a bit. My name is Danielle Foster, and I am an Ottawa, Canada native of Jamaican descent. I have many hobbies, which include fitness, singing/dancing, eating, napping and adventuring in any adrenaline-filled activity. Sarcasm is essentially my first language, and I can beat just about anyone in a game of iPhone pool. I am a massive lover of Christ (shoutout to G.O.D. for real) and am actively involved in the church community as it gives me a sense of peace.

So, why exactly am I here? I need your help.

Since childhood, I have envisioned becoming a Black physician and inspiring my community to be more conscious of their health. I have witnessed and heard the complaints of many in my city wanting more healthcare providers within the BIPOC community. As I listened to their concerns about not having enough representation in health care, I felt helpless because I wanted one school to allow me to obtain my MD degree and inspire lives. By God’s grace, I received an acceptance to a Caribbean med school with commencement this Fall (Aug 30, to be exact) and what I thought would be relatively smooth preparation.

Unfortunately, finances are my most significant setback. Canadian banks only offer a Line of Credit for med students (the amount provided isn’t enough to cover my medical sciences semesters, but some financing is better than nothing.) The LoCs offered requires co-signer(s), which I haven’t been having the best of luck with (still working on it, but I’m REALLY pressed for time). With much hesitation, I decided to set up a GoFundMe in the hopes of acquiring enough funds to get me through my first year, if not first semester while I continue to get my finances sorted. I know the asking amount is a lot, but med school isn’t exactly the cheapest of professional degrees, and payments are in USD (yay for conversion rates! -_-)

First-year consists of three semesters to which I would allocate the funds. Specifically, funds would be distributed, but are not limited to, housing, tuition, administrative and educational fees, supplies, and personal expenses while away. As you can imagine, it’s a costly investment.

I’m not expecting any donations; prayers and well-wishes during my studies are more than enough for me. Yes, it’s tough having big dreams yet not all the resources to fulfill them, but I'm not one to give up before exhausting all my options. I didn’t want to turn down this opportunity because I was too prideful to be vulnerable and seek help.

If you feel it in your heart to donate, my gratitude will forever be with you. I will also gratefully accept advice, a simple share of this link, or recommendations with open arms. Regardless, thank you for visiting my page, and God bless you all.

Sincerely,
A young Christian woman wanting to advocate for healthcare with an MD in her back pocket.
