Hurricane Harvey had a life changing impact on thousands of people. There are certain donation drives asking for funds knowing full well that only a portion of the funds will ever make their way to people who actually need them while most of the funds will disappear in administrative fees.
This Go Fund Me effort is for one family of two women who have lost everything. Juana Contreras, a widower in her 60s and her daughter Cristina, an office worker in her 30s. They are my mother-in-law and sister-in-law, and despite my wife and I doing everything we can to help, their need is still massive.
A number of friends and family have asked them what is needed. Juana and Cristina are still shell shocked and don’t know how to answer that question when the answer is everything. Their modest home at 11026 Lafferty Oaks in Houston (close to Hunting Bayou) was flooded over three feet and everything was trashed. Though the home is in a humble neighborhood and their possessions were not extravagant, it’s all they had. They need to replace walls, cabinets, bathroom tiles, A/C unit, beds, chairs, sofa, washer, dryer, refrigerator, stove, blender, clothes… the list seems endless. A lifetime of saving and filling out a home that was ruined in less than four days.
