Winter Clothing Fundraiser

We, at Wave, are preparing for our winter distribution. Temperatures in Thessaloniki have dropped recently and will continue to do so, regularly reaching below zero in the winter. Many of those who avail of our services live in precarious housing situations, with inadequate clothing and little or no access to electricity and heating. Our winter distribution is vital to ensure people are kept warm during the cold winter months.

As much of the public and media is focused on the ongoing Russian war in Ukraine, there has been a decline in attention regarding other urgent humanitarian crises, leading to insufficient donations to other global causes. This has greatly affected us here at Wave, as we have seen a significant decline in donations. Still, there is an extreme demand for these contributions, due to the continuous number of people-on-the-move (POM) throughout Europe. POM face a hostile environment in Greece, whereby political and media discourse has framed migration as a security issue. Those without documents are denied access to basic humanitarian services, forcing people to live in impoverished conditions.

Simultaneously, with the rise of prices in the country, we are finding it exceptionally difficult to provide new winter items like sleeping bags, gloves or thermal underwear to the community here at Wave.

This is where we ask you to step in. We need your help to supply each community member with the necessary supplies to get them through the cold winter months. We aim to fundraise €5000 to buy all the urgently needed clothes and materials, including gloves, scarves, hats, thermal tops and bottoms, winter jackets, emergency blankets and sleeping bags.

A pair of winter gloves cost us €7 to buy, a winter jacket is €20, thermal tops and bottoms are €10 and €13 respectively and one warm sleeping bag is €25.

Every donation, no matter how big or small will help keep people-on-the-move here in Thessaloniki warm and safe throughout the winter.
