JSEMers and anyone related or with a kind heart,
We have read Norma Field (or been assigned to read it), travelled to Okinawa together, and all visited the memorial of Chibichirigama in Yomitan, either guided by the vision and courage of Chibanasan or the passion and strength of Higasan. Yesterday, the important memorial to honor and remember those who took their own lives or took the lives of their loved ones because of a messed-up, crazy nationalism that emphasized death for the emperor of Japan over one's own life was hatefully vandalized (once again.)
It is almost too much. Almost.
But please remember your debt to the people of Okinawa and Yomitan today for giving you the ability to empathize with and sympathetically understand people, perspectives, and situations in which you are actually not personally affected. I urge you most strongly to remember your debt to those who have made you actually more human-better- than you were before you met them.
Join me in giving to a fund for the restoration of Chibichirigama - a site which reminds all of us in the US and Japan of the importance of remembering the past.
But money is never, ever the answer. It is the humanity that we received that we are now required to give back. Please send me a letter or note (English or Japanese) that I can pass on to Chibanasan or Higasan to give them individually the support they need in a time that can only be one of despair and loss of faith in humanity.
It is time to give back. Feel bad if you don't step up. What else are you REALLY doing today I ask you individually.
