Delana's diabetic service dog fund

I am writing this on behalf of my daughter Delana. She was diagnosed March 28,2014 with Type 1 diabetes. She is 7 years old in 2nd grade. Delana is a brave girl. She is also an amazing child. She is insulin dependent and receives 8-10 insulin injections a day. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease. Delana didn't do anything to get it. For some reason she got it. She will not out grow this disease. There is no cure for type 1 diabetes. The only way to treat type 1 is with insulin. Type 1 is a very complicated and scary disease. She has to poke her finger at least 8-10 times a day and somedays more depending on her Blood Glocose numbers..
Delana has never complained or cryed about her new disease or her new life. She just rolls with the punches and continues to be her awesome self. Type 1 diabetics has to be closely monitored and it must be controlled. If not monitored or controlled it can and will have grave consequences. I wish it was easy but as a parent of a type 1 diabetic child it's anything but easy. You have to do blood Glucose checks throughout the day, and night. It has no limitations. A lot of nights I am up checking blood glucose to make sure Delana is at a safe range. If she isn't I stay up and treat her until her BG is at a safe number. It would be easy if it was black and white but I've come to know Type 1 doesn't have any Rhyme or reasoning.
Everyday is a new adventure to say in the least, more like a nightmare really. Delana is a very energetic child. She loves to dance, sing, ride her bike, swim to name a few. If her BG (blood Glocose) is too low she must eat carbs to raise her BG. If it's too high she needs insulin. If it's too high she has to check for keytones. Sometimes she eats carbs and her BG continues to go down, so she will have to eat another 15 carb snack and test her blood every 20 minutes until she is at her target BG number. This happens anytime of day or night, that's why type 1 can be really dangerous. Exercise, heat, stress, sickness to name a few effect BG.
Delana has a dream to be able to one day have a diabetic service dog to help keep her safe . Diabetic service dogs are trained on there individual diabetic BG. So, Delana would be able to have a service dog that would be trained on her specific scent. The dog would alert Delana or myself if she was having a low lower than 80 and alert us anything over 150. Delana just wants to be as normal as a child and if she was able to raise enough money for a service dog it would help her have not only security but independence as well.
She carries her diabetic bag everywhere she goes. It's her lifeline so it's important to have it close by her at all times. A dog would also help by carrying her supplies in a vest. A service dog would be a great help to me as well. As a Mom of a type 1 diabetic child it can be very stressful. I know that at anytime , for no reason, bad things could happen at anytime for unknown reasons.
Luckily Delana has never suffered a seizure or been in a coma but it is always a possibility. No matter how close I watch over her it can always happen. I realize having a service dog isn't a fix all. It would just help keep Delana as safe as possible anytime. Delana and I would feel safer and I know Delana would feel more comfortable to be more independent knowing she had a service dog with her at all times.
She has wanted to start fund raising for awhile but last year was a difficult one for our family. I figured I would start the fund raising by starting a gofundme account. Delana and I would be grateful for any donation. It is going toward a great little girl to be able to get a service dog. She is such a fabulous girl that would be so happy and grateful to have a service dog that could help keep her safe and healthy. I've looked into service dogs and the ones I've researched run about 15,000 dollars. It covers the cost of the dog and it's training. However to get the process to get the training started is$ 2500. Every and any donations will help Delana's dream Become reality for her. Remember these dogs are trained specifically on the diabetic person they are paired with. They are trained so it can help save Delanas life and a service dog would help keep her as healthy as possible and help her feel comfortable to be independent but could also Save Her Life!!
